IBS patients may experience symptoms ranging from recurrent diarrhea to constipation. Mucus may be present in the stool, and stool consistency can vary from watery to lumpy, which is associated with difficult bowel movements. Although IBS does not pose a life-threatening risk, it significantly impairs quality of life, making accurate diagnosis crucial to rule out other causes. It is noteworthy that certain herbs may aid in alleviating IBS symptoms. For those with diarrhea, astringent herbs such as infusions from blueberry leaves, peppermint, lemon balm, and strawberries may be beneficial. For constipation, herbs like cleavers, silverweed, marsh-speedwell, mullein root, and motherwort are recommended.

The management of irritable bowel syndrome involves not only medication and psychological support but also dietary adjustments. It is essential to avoid foods that trigger symptoms, particularly those high in FODMAPs. Milk, eggs, coffee, and alcohol often exacerbate symptoms. Keeping a food diary to track consumed items and symptom onset can help identify problematic ingredients. In cases where constipation is the dominant symptom, high-fiber foods and adequate hydration may provide relief. Fiber absorbs water, increasing the volume of food and promoting bowel motility. IBS is challenging to diagnose, and its symptoms can significantly impair quality of life. A well-planned diet can effectively reduce symptom severity and improve the well-being of affected individuals.
