Influence of Excessive Dietary Sugar on Skin Condition

The condition of the skin, its appearance and nutrition are dependent on its type, cosmetic care, lifestyle (stress, addiction), health status, and proper hydration and nourishment of the body. Let's ponder the last point - will properly "feeding" our skin result in its impeccable presentation? What if our diet consists of large quantities of simple sugars - will that "enhance" our appearance, or perhaps not necessarily?

The impact of sugar on skin health

A major contributor to the development of skin rashes, dandruff, eruptions, crusts, and similar skin changes is a diet high in simple sugars. In cases of skin issues, the ideal approach would be to completely remove this component, though a satisfactory alternative is to restrict it to no more than 10% of the total daily carbohydrate intake. It is advisable to avoid: white flour products (light bread, pasta, rice), added sugars, confectionery, baked goods, highly processed foods containing high-fructose corn syrup, nectars, beverages, and juices – essentially, foods with a high glycemic index (GI). Ensuring a balanced diet is crucial, one that provides sufficient nutrients, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Opting for unprocessed foods and choosing mineral water and herbal teas for hydration is recommended.

Sugar's Role in Acne Development

While acne is commonly linked to adolescence, it is not exclusive to teenagers. A diet high in simple sugars can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to skin issues. Processed foods like sweets, sodas, and baked goods contain simple carbohydrates and sugar syrups that harm the skin. Excessive consumption of these products results in hyperglycemia and increased insulin release, stimulating sebum production and IGF-1 secretion. Insulin plays a key role in sebum formation and can exacerbate acne symptoms. Individuals with acne should maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients and avoid high-glycemic foods. Skin condition is largely dependent on daily diet – opting for fresh, natural products will improve skin health.
