How Precisely Does Physical Activity Influence the Course of COVID-19?

The pandemic is causing many individuals to suffer from insomnia. Measures have been implemented to safeguard society from the spread of the virus. This situation is also impacting human psychological well-being, leading to an increase in anxiety and stress levels. Physical activity has a favorable impact on mental and physical health. Unfortunately, these measures have discouraged many people from participating in regular exercise. However, the question remains: is there a correlation between exercise and the progression of COVID-19?

Does insufficient physical activity increase the likelihood of severe COVID-19?

R. Sallis and colleagues investigated hospitalization rates, intensive care unit admissions (OIOM) and mortality rates in patients with COVID-19 who did not engage in any physical activity; engaged in physical activity but below the recommended daily level; met physical activity criteria. The study involved 48 440 people with COVID-19. It was found that the risk of hospitalization, OIOM admission and death due to infection was higher in inactive individuals compared to those who were occasionally or regularly physically active. A similar correlation was observed between individuals who occasionally exercised and those who were regularly physically active. Apart from advanced age and transplant history, the absence of physical activity was identified as the strongest risk factor for severe disease progression. Therefore, one can conclude that consistently following guidelines for physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of serious health consequences in infected individuals.

How to ensure physical activity during pandemic conditions?

During pandemic conditions, access to many facilities where one can engage in sports or relaxation may be restricted. However, it is important to know that regular physical activity has a positive impact on human health and reduces the risk of severe COVID-19. Therefore, one should consider what type of physical activity to choose in order not to expose oneself and others to infection. There are many possibilities, for example, using outdoor physical activity, which is a very good solution. In winter it can be skiing or sledging, in summer it can be outdoor exercise, jogging or cycling. The most important thing is to choose a physical activity that brings the most satisfaction, as forced exercise reduces motivation. One can also consider home training, for example, with bodyweight or with purchased equipment, which is an excellent alternative for people who do not have access to professionally equipped gyms. Elastic bands are relatively cheap and allow for a full-body workout. Depending on the available space at home, one can invest in more advanced equipment, such as dumbbells with adjustable weight, a pull-up bar or TRX bands. However, the most important thing is not to give up on movement during this time, despite many restrictions in the fitness industry and to continue regular physical activity.

The impact of the pandemic on the extent of physical activity in contemporary society

M. Y. Marashi and his team conducted a study on a group of 1660 people to examine how the pandemic affects the extent of physical activity in contemporary society. It was found that during this pandemic, the extent of physical activity has significantly decreased, even by 30 minutes on a weekly basis. Furthermore, a decrease in motivation for regular exercise, increased stress levels, and deterioration in mood were observed. Although most people feel the need for movement, the stress associated with the pandemic has a demotivating effect. It is worth noting that regular physical activity is very important. However, this does not mean that only strenuous workouts should be performed. Activities such as walking or recreational cycling can also bring many health benefits and at the same time reduce stress levels.

Compendium

In the epoch of the pandemic, it can be challenging to gain access to recreational centers and well-equipped gyms. Nevertheless, maintaining consistent physical activity remains worthwhile. An appropriate quantity of movement per day exerts a positive influence on human health, elevates mood, and lessens stress levels. Furthermore, it has been proven that physically active individuals are less vulnerable to the severe course of COVID-19. However, the pandemic has resulted in a decline in motivation for physical activity and an escalation in stress levels. Outdoor training or training at home can enhance our mental well-being.
