What is hoodia actually?
Hoodia is a succulent primarily found in the southern regions of Africa, specifically in countries such as Angola, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. This plant is often associated with the Kalahari Desert. The presence of hoodia in a specific region determines its primary characteristic - hoodia gordonii, like a cactus, is succulent, meaning that it is adapted to high temperatures. Thanks to specialized tissues that can store water, hoodia is able to survive in harsh environmental conditions. An additional, distinctive feature of hoodia is its scent, which is spread by flowers reminiscent of rotting meat. Hoodia gordonii was first discovered in 1779 by Colonel Robert Gordon Jacob in the Orange River region.
Hoodia and its effect
The question of why we are even discussing hoodia, given that it is such an obscure and hard-to-reach plant, is intriguing. The reason for this is its growing popularity in the media, where it has been promoted as an effective weight reduction instrument and a weapon against obesity. Hence, it is worth investigating the actual possibilities of hoodia. The first scientific reports about the effect of hoodia on obesity come from the indigenous inhabitants of Africa, who claim that consuming fragments of this plant leads to a significant decrease in hunger, which is extremely beneficial during prolonged stays in desert regions.

In view of this, hoodia gondoria appears to be a dietary supplement with questionable effectiveness. The absence of detailed studies on the actual impact of this plant on the human body and its presumed action does not speak in favor of this plant. On the one hand, there is nothing preventing one from exploring its properties, however, on the other hand, it makes no sense to focus on something that is not fully understood and investigated. I believe we still need to wait a little longer before hoodia is thoroughly researched and understood. At this point, it is better to avoid dietary supplements that use its effects, as they usually contain only small amounts of hoodia.
