Constipation is a widespread issue, particularly affecting women. Typically, it involves functional constipation, characterized by slowed movement of food through the digestive tract. The primary cause is usually an imbalanced diet and insufficient physical activity. A common deficiency is inadequate fiber intake, stemming from excessive consumption of highly processed foods with minimal fiber content. To enhance digestive function, it is advisable to first implement lifestyle and dietary modifications (unless constipation is caused by electrolyte imbalances, bowel disorders, cancers, or other serious conditions).

It's a high-fiber diet

The high-fiber diet is primarily dedicated to people with functional impairments. Fiber, as a part of plant cells that cannot be digested by human enzymes, performs many important functions shorten intestinal passage time, reduce cholesterol levels, stimulate gut microflora, have a positive effect on glycemia. However, the recommended daily intake of fiber in adults has been set at 25 g.

A high-fiber diet is the rule

If your diet has so far consisted mainly of purified cereals (white flour, clear baking, white rice) and vegetables are on your table occasionally the fiber content of your daily diet is likely to be insufficient. Increasing this amount should be done gradually.

High-fiber diet recommended and prohibited products

Recommended group of products Forbidden baking Raw food, e.g. Graham, crunchy bread, pumpkin White baking, casseroles, yeast buns, baking powder Full-bodied dough Highly purified dough, cassava flour, brown rice, jaguars, oatmeal, eggplants, manna, maize Vegetables, unique fruits, sugars Any kind of vegetables, juices, mainly vegetable juices Sweet jellies, sweeteners, flavoured beans with a minimum substitution of high-fat water, fermented juice, water-based drinks, herbal juice, strong drink, alcohol, vegetable oils and juice.

The high-fiber diet is recommended

This diet is primarily used to treat intestinal constipation. However, this diet can be helpful in the weight loss process, as increased fiber intake in the meal reduces appetite and thus calorie intake.

A high-fiber diet is contraindicated

A high-carb diet is not recommended for people with inflammatory stomach, intestinal, pancreas, gastrointestinal conditions, unhealthy bowel infections during periods of exacerbation, malnourished people. Fiber is also associated with the presence of phytic acid, which makes it difficult to absorb iron, calcium and zinc, which is important e.g. in people with iron deficiency anemia.
