Granola is a combination of baked cereal flakes, nuts, dried fruits, and sugar or honey, which can also be enhanced with additional ingredients such as chocolate, coconut flakes, coconut chips, and spices. It is usually consumed alongside milk or yogurt, which offers an excellent option for a quick and convenient breakfast or lunch at work.

Benefits of granola

Granola is a product that not only tastes excellent but also has a high nutritional value, which depends on its composition. It is primarily a rich source of carbohydrates, which provide the body with a high dose of energy. Granola also contains many nutrients, such as dietary fiber, which helps regulate bowel function and increase the release of cholesterol and bile salts. If granola contains more nuts and seeds, it can be richer in protein and healthy fats. In addition, granola is a source of many minerals such as zinc, potassium, magnesium, manganese, calcium, phosphorus, and copper. In particular, granola with oat flakes is very beneficial for the health of people with problems in carbohydrate metabolism.

Disadvantages of granola grains

Granola is a product with high energy density, providing around 400 kcal per 100 g of product. The preparation of granola grains requires baking cereal flakes, which results in the loss of some minerals and vitamins contained in the flakes, nuts, or seeds. Consequently, ready-made granolas often contain significant amounts of sugar in various forms, such as glucose-fructose syrup, glucose syrup, fructose syrup, or dextrose. A wide range of such products can be found on the market, also with a very good composition. Of course, the finished granola is readily available, quick and easy to prepare. It is sufficient to pour it into a bowl and cover it with milk or yogurt. However, it may contain unnecessary ingredients, such as palm oil, large amounts of sugar, leavening agents, etc. Therefore, it is extremely important to carefully check the composition of the products that we want to buy during shopping, and choose those with the highest value. It is also possible to prepare granola at home. Any type of cereal flakes (oat, spelt, wheat, barley, rye, etc.), nuts, dried or freeze-dried fruits, and honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup are needed for making granola. The preparation is simple. The nuts should be cut into smaller pieces. The flakes, nuts, or kernels should be mixed with honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup and baked in the oven until they turn brown, stirring occasionally. The baked granola should be mixed with the remaining ingredients and left to cool. Store in a glass container.

Granola with cocoa and coconut

Preparation of the granola blend

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Cover the baking sheet with baking paper. 2. Heat coconut oil and honey until they soften and transfer to a bowl. 3. Combine the remaining ingredients, excluding bitter chocolate and dried dates, with honey and coconut oil. Spread the mixture evenly on the sheet and bake until golden brown, occasionally stirring with a wooden spoon. 4. After baking, transfer the granola to a bowl and allow it to cool. 5. Cut the dates and chocolate into small pieces and combine with the granola. 6. Store the granola in an airtight container. From the given quantities, you will get 18 portions. Nutritional value per portion of granola (50 g): Energy value: 209.9 kcal. Protein: 5.0 g. Fat: 8.6 g. Total carbohydrates: 29.9 g. Fiber: 3.3 g.

First and foremost, it is essential to understand the composition of the products. If our knowledge is limited, it is better to choose products with a short composition. Avoid granolas with additives such as glucose-fructose syrup, sucralose, glucose syrup, fructose syrup, palm oil. The fewer additives, the better. To keep granola fresh and crispy, store it in a tightly closed, dry container. We can quickly and easily prepare delicious, healthy bars with granola - just mix granola with melted butter, shape and bake.
