Anxiety can make life very challenging, and this challenge is particularly experienced by those who have been prevented from meeting new people, being able to socialize freely, or delivering public speeches due to anxiety. Anxiety also impacts health aspects. Diet has a significant impact on our health, but are there products that can lessen our anxiety symptoms?

Anxiety and anxiety disorders

Anxiety accompanies us from childhood and manifests in various forms and intensities. We often say that anxiety "paralyzes us" or that we have a "fear of heights". Anxiety is a negative emotional state that arises in dangerous situations, which may be caused by external conditions or internal factors. It is accompanied by uncertainty, tension, and a sense of threat. Chronic anxiety can develop into anxiety disorders, which are a type of mental illness affecting social, behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and somatic functioning. The range of symptoms is extensive, making it easy to imagine how they can disrupt a person's normal functioning. The causes of these disorders are diverse and may include biological factors as well as individual personality traits.

Anxiety disorders and diet

Diet plays a crucial role not only in weight management but also in regulating the nervous system and enhancing well-being. The widely held belief that dark chocolate improves mood is not merely a marketing tactic. The magnesium it contains supports nervous system function, while the presence of alkaloids such as caffeine and theobromine boosts energy levels. Additionally, phenylethylamine in chocolate enhances concentration, strengthens cognitive abilities, and reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels. In the case of anxiety disorders, it is important to note that diet alone cannot eliminate these conditions. Appropriate psychological or psychiatric care is necessary, depending on the severity of symptoms. However, it is essential that daily nutrition provides sufficient energy, vitamins, and magnesium. Incorporating certain key foods into the diet can lead to noticeable improvements in bodily functions. One such food is avocado, which compensates for folate deficiency, promoting the production of happiness hormones like serotonin and noradrenaline. Furthermore, avocado oxygenates the brain, improves concentration through its high content of potassium and the amino acid tyrosine, which are responsible for cognitive processes. Another valuable dietary component is almonds, rich in vitamin E—a potent antioxidant—and vitamin B2, which supports nervous system function. Almonds also contain zinc, potassium, and iron, which positively influence mental state. Whole grains are an essential part of the diet as they contain tryptophan, an amino acid necessary for serotonin production. Fruits like bananas also have a beneficial effect on the nervous system. They contain vitamin B6, magnesium, and potassium, which normalize nervous system function, help relax muscles, and reduce tension in stressful situations. Depending on their ripeness, bananas provide tryptophan or dopamine, which improve mood. In addition to fruits, legumes, particularly lentils, are beneficial for mental health. They contain easily digestible protein, B vitamins, and folic acid, which enhance well-being and aid in stress management. The maca root, rich in iron and magnesium, exhibits antidepressant effects and improves mood. It is referred to as the "treasure of the Incas" due to its properties, such as increasing energy, reducing stress, and enhancing cognitive function. Linden honey has a relaxing effect, reduces smooth muscle tension, stimulates the function of certain internal organs, and demonstrates stress-relieving properties. Teas made from herbs like St. John's wort or Arctic root improve brain function and mitigate the negative impact of stress. Anxiety disorders are a serious condition requiring consultation with a psychologist or psychiatrist. Diet can serve as a support in managing this disorder, so it is advisable to enrich the diet with foods such as lentils, maca root, linden honey, dark chocolate, bananas, or almonds, which offer health benefits in moderation.
