Sodium, primarily consumed as sodium chloride in households and food industries, is vital for bodily functions. However, excessive intake may result in significant health risks.

The properties of salt

Kitchen salt Sodium chloride, is a crystalline compound responsible for the water and acidity of the body. It is recognized by the taste buds located on the surface of the tongue as the taste of salt.

Salt and hypertension

Salt is essential to life, but its widespread use in excess amounts leads to high blood pressure and, as a consequence, stroke. There are many conflicting scientific studies on the effect of salt on the development of hypertension.

Salt and a diet

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a daily intake of sodium of not more than 5 grams. It is alarming that marketed foods, high-processed food, fast food, ready-mix condiments, raspberries contain a significant amount of salt. Therefore, it is advisable to prepare your own meals without the use of the above mentioned products. Three times the recommended salt intake is primarily due to food packaging, the consumption of ready-to-eat foods, soup in powder, preservatives, as well as fast food and flavourings.
