Over the past few years, the high-fat and low-carb diet has gained popularity due to its rapid weight loss effects, attracting many followers. However, despite the quick reduction in body weight, this dietary approach also carries potential adverse effects for overall health.
A high-fat diet
The high-fat diet is a diet that meets the energy needs of most fats (about 7080%).. Contrary to the recommendations for a healthy person, where carbohydrates make up more than half of the daily calories, here they make up a small percentage of a daily menu.. An example of a high fat diet is the Kvasnovsky diet, where the recommended fat intake is 33.5 g/kg of body weight.
A high-fat diet is the rule
The basic premise of any high-fat diet is the dominance of fatty acids over other elements of the diet. Take, for example, Jan Kwaśniewski's proposal, which recommended the consumption of nutrients in specific proportions: per 1 kg of body weight should fall 1 g of protein, 3 g of fat, 0.8 g of carbohydrates. For a person weighing 70 kg, this gives 70 g of proteins per day, 245 g of fats, 56 g of carbon dioxide per day (according to the American Institute of Medicine recommendations, 100 g of calories per day is a necessary minimum for the body weight of eggs per day or a minimum of 300 g of body fat per day for the brain weight of fat supplied, which is almost five g or more).
High-fat diet for whom?
The Kosniewski diet, like the Atkins and South Beach diets, has been categorized as high-fat ketogenic diets which are officially adhered to by the Polish Society of Nutrition Sciences. The above diets are not recommended by most people, especially those with the intention of reducing body weight (and for this purpose are also recommended by the developers). Exceptions are people who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases e.g. epilepsy.
A high-fat diet has effects
The high-fat ketogenic diet affects the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Unfortunately, this is an adverse effect. Although it is actually associated with weight loss, it is not worth the other effects. A low intake of carbs causes a decrease in blood glucose (the main energy substrate) level, depleting the glycogen stores in the liver and muscle (glucose loss), which, unfortunately, has to be converted to other sources of energy.

A diet based on fats, especially saturated fats from animal sources, is not a diet that has a beneficial effect on the body if it is prolonged. If it is used for a few weeks or even shorter, it changes a number of metabolic processes. The body, due to insufficient carbohydrate intake, has to switch to other sources of energy. These are amino acids and fatty acids. However, if this process is extended, there is a loss of protein, especially muscle, as well as a dependency on fatty bodies that do not physically deliver the essential energy.
