A carefully structured dietary plan represents the cornerstone of effective type 1 and type 2 diabetes management… The nutritional choices made on a daily basis not only govern postprandial glucose fluctuations but also influence long-term metabolic markers and patients’ overall quality of life… Are there sweet alternatives that—when consumed with caution and moderation—could be incorporated into a diabetic meal plan? What specific criteria should these alternatives meet to mitigate hyperglycemic risks while still satisfying the innate desire for sweetness?

Honey and sugar

Honey is not only high in carbohydrates, but also in many nutrients, and it has many health benefits. The fact is that it contains a lot of sugar, which diabetes should avoid. However, scientists say that it has a milder effect on glucose than other sugars. It is also sweeter than sucrose, so we use it less to taste sweet. Compared to other carbs, it has several valuable properties, such as antibacterial action or strengthening the body's immune system.

Fructose and diabetes

When we look for a sweet taste, we wonder if fructose might not be a good substitute for white sugar. Fructose is much sweeter than sucrose (which, like honey, makes us use it less once in a while) and at the same time shows a lower glycemic index. Let's not forget that fructase is also a simple sugar that raises the glucose level after consumption.

Cinnamon sugar and sugar

In the search for an ideal substitute for white sugar with equally sweet tastes, there comes what is widely considered to be healthy cane sugar. Derived from cane sugar, brown sugar is not purified. It can be called "healthier" because in the process of its production no mineral ingredients such as iron, magnesium, potassium or calcium are removed. However, remember that it is still sugar, but it is almost pure in form, which is not indicated for diabetics. It is grown by preserving its nutritional properties. Just as white sugar raises blood glucose levels and is calorific.

Sweets for diabetics

When you have diabetes, you should avoid sweet snacks. But there is an alternative to chocolate or cake at home. In the shops, you can rarely find specially prepared foods for diabetics, especially when it comes to sweetness, low-sugar products with a sugar content of 0%, replacing it with other sweeteners (sweeteners). However, at home, we can make sugar-free cookies from white cheese, flour, salt, and apples or other simple snacks that contain sugar instead of regular sugar. However, we should not forget to keep them hot.
