For coffee devotees, the splendid news is that Danish scholars have discovered compounds, through which coffee becomes extraordinary in its characteristics and can inhibit the development of diabetes.

The consequences of drinking coffee on the human body

Coffee was previously considered to be harmful to health. Now, there is growing evidence that it may prevent certain types of cancer, liver disease, depression, and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. In the latest studies by the Harvard School of Public Health, research findings from around the world were compared regarding the impact of coffee consumption on the body of individuals with type 2 diabetes. The analysis conducted by a group of researchers confirmed that regular intake of the aromatic beverage may also decrease the risk of developing diabetes.

Cafestol and caffeic acid

Research carried out by Søren Gregersen from Aarhus University Hospital focused on the impact of various biologically active substances found in coffee on rat cell lines. It was discovered that caffeic acid and cafestol are the most effective components that decrease glucose levels in the blood. Both of these compounds affect insulin production and increase glucose uptake in muscle cells. This discovery could contribute to the development of new antidiabetic drugs.
