Can an appropriate nutrition plan help reduce the symptoms of cellulite?

A very large number of women struggle with cellulite, but it can also affect men. Low physical activity, inadequate fluid intake, and inadequate diet are just some of the possible causes. It is possible that an appropriate nutrition plan can help in reducing the symptoms of cellulite.

What is lipodystrophy

Cellulite, also known as lipodystrophy, is a non-inflammatory phenomenon associated with improper distribution of fat cells that leads to irregular skin structure. Lipodystrophy affects all layers of the skin, including the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. It most commonly occurs in pregnant women, during puberty, during the menstrual cycle, and in women who use oral contraception (M. Frandofert, A. Mazzalska, J. Mazza 2013). It is estimated that approximately 85–90% of women worldwide struggle with cellulite (A. Lisiecka, W. Hetman 2021). It most commonly appears on the thighs, buttocks, and hips. In some individuals, in addition to the characteristic changes in skin structure, microvenous and fissures may also be present. This is mainly due to disturbances in skin elasticity. Furthermore, cellulite may be accompanied by a feeling of skin tension, cramps, and mild discomfort. The most common cause of lipodystrophy is considered to be hormonal influence. Estrogens, which are mainly present in women (also in trace amounts in men), affect the blood vessels and cause their dilation. An excess increases the risk of cellulite. Other mentioned causes include an inadequate diet, insufficient physical activity, and an insufficient amount of consumed fluids (A. Lisiecka, W. Hetman 2021).

Dermatological conditions - types

Dermatological conditions can be categorized into watery and fatty types... The classification depends on the extent of the development of changes in skin structure.

Water-infused cellulite, otherwise firm

Initially, it can be noticed in the lower body regions, such as the shins and knees. The skin in these areas is very taut and prone to deformation under pressure. It is often mistakenly classified as muscle tissue. This type of cellulite is easy to decrease by increasing physical activity and introducing healthy dietary patterns.

Fatty lipodystrophy, otherwise benign

It is a type of lipodystrophy that overweight individuals most frequently encounter. It is primarily situated in the buttocks and thighs. The characteristic trait is an irregular skin structure, and the changes appear in its deeper layers.

Can Dietary Changes Help Prevent the Onset of Cellulite?

An unhealthy diet and low-quality food products can contribute to the development of cellulite, but there is no specific diet that can help in its prevention. Human nutrition has no significant impact on the production of sex hormones. As mentioned before, estrogens play a crucial role in lipodystrophy. However, this does not mean that changes in diet cannot improve skin structure. Adhering to certain principles of healthy eating, especially when combined with physical activity, can bring desired results in the fight against cellulite. However, there are no specific dietary recommendations that could completely solve this problem.

Restriction of salt ingestion

Salt, more precisely sodium, has a significant impact on the formation of swellings. This is due to its influence on the body's water economy. Excessive amounts can lead to water retention, which in turn results in swellings. There are several methods to decrease salt intake. For instance, one can diminish the quantity of salt added to meals, evade the use of salt shakers, and substitute salt with fresh herbs and spices. It is also advisable to read food labels and opt for products with lower salt content. In numerous food products such as processed meats, baked goods, cheese, and preservatives, the addition of salt is highly prevalent.

Limitation in the intake of simple sugars

Excessive consumption of simple sugars in the diet results in the accumulation of fatty tissue, which increases the likelihood of cellulite or exacerbation of its condition. The primary sources of simple sugars in the diet are sweet treats such as cookies, cakes, chocolates, candies, and colorful beverages. Limiting their intake or completely eliminating them will have a beneficial impact on maintaining a healthy body weight.

Limitation of saturated fat consumption

Saturated fatty acids not only exert a negative influence on the functioning of the circulatory system, but can also contribute to an increase in fatty tissue. The primary sources of these fats in food are fatty meats, cream, butter, cheese, and sweets. A heightened consumption of these products can result in weight gain, and it is recommended to opt for leaner meat varieties such as chicken and turkey, limit the intake of animal fats and sweets. By doing so, proper skin structure can be maintained and the process of lipodystrophy can be prevented.

Leave behind harmful habits

Relinquishing alcohol and cigarettes proves to be beneficial, even for those plagued by cellulite. Ingestion of beverages with a high alcohol content may disrupt the normal functioning of the body's water balance, leading to water retention and ultimately resulting in an uneven skin structure.

Quaff two and a half litres of water

In both the prevention of cellulite and the struggle against this issue, proper and adequate hydration is key. It is recommended that fluid intake for women should be 2 litres and for men 2.5 litres. Instead of sweetened and coloured beverages, it is advisable to opt for water, preferably medium- or high-mineralised. Adequate hydration helps reduce swelling and improve the functioning of the circulatory system.

Preserve physical activity

The union of a balanced diet with routine physical activity substantially lessens the risk of cellulite occurrence and aids in combating this affliction. The form of physical activity should be adjusted to the prevailing state of health. This may include walking, nordic walking, running, swimming, or strength training. Individuals who previously did not practice an active lifestyle should progressively incorporate exercises into their schedule to avert overburdening the body.

Do not forget rest and regeneration process

Systematic breaks and suitable regeneration processes lessen the likelihood of cellulite and support the fight against this issue. Avoid extended periods of sitting or standing, as they can have negative impacts on the appearance of our figure. Appropriate amounts of sleep and the limitation of exposure to stress-inducing factors significantly contribute to the prevention of lipodystrophy.

Overview

The most prevalent cause of cellulite is hormones, regrettably, however, diet will not have a significant impact on their secretion. Nonetheless, modifying dietary habits for preventive purposes as well as for the treatment of lipodystrophy is advisable. Complying with the recommendations provided in this article can be tremendously useful. Avoiding products that disrupt water economy and circulation is necessary. Do not neglect proper hydration and physical activity either.
