Calorie Content in Desserts: Can You Find Healthy Desserts?

Each of us has a different relationship with sweets, which is more common than we think. From birth, our dietary preferences lean towards sweet flavors. This is something natural, but also exploited by the food industry to produce high-calorie products. There is a broad range of sweet snacks and desserts available on the market, particularly ice creams, which are favored by many of us on hot days.

Natural ice cream from natural ingredients

Natural ice cream should primarily be made of cream, milk, eggs, and fresh fruits. However, many manufacturers add large amounts of sugar, artificial colorings, and emulsifiers to their products. Water often replaces cream, and pastes and powders are used instead of fresh fruits. Natural ice cream should not contain large amounts of saturated fatty acids, which can contribute to the development of heart disease and diabetes. Be wary of marketing slogans such as „natural ice cream“ or „ice cream like in the old days“, as they do not always indicate healthy products. The nutritional value of artificially produced desserts is often lower than that of natural ice cream. Always check the composition of ice cream you buy in the store and read the labels to find out what ingredients it was made of and what nutrients it can provide. If you buy ice cream from a seller, ask the seller about the ingredients and information about possible allergens.

Nutritional components and health value of ice cream

Ice cream is often perceived as a sweet treat with a high calorie content that does not provide the body with any beneficial nutrients. However, compared to other snacks and sweets in this category, ice cream has a relatively low energy value. Among the different varieties of ice cream (natural, sorbets, water, yogurt), sorbets are the least caloric. They consist of more than 60% water, which makes them very nutritious, especially on hot days. In sorbets, you will not find milk, cream, or eggs, which means that they are virtually fat-free. Sorbet, compared to traditional ice cream, is often not served with chocolate, colorful sprinkles, or whipped cream. Its caloric value ranges from 60 to 120 kcal per 100 grams, depending on taste or composition. Other high-energy varieties include: yogurt ice cream: about 100 kcal per 100 grams; milk-fruit: 120 kcal per 100 grams; vanilla ice cream: 149 kcal per 100 grams; cream ice cream: 160 kcal per 100 grams; chocolate ice cream: 200 kcal per 100 grams. Often, we are tempted by additions to ice cream such as whipped cream, flavor surfaces, sprinkles, chocolate, waffles, alcohol, or various sauces, which can significantly affect the caloric value of a portion of ice cream and provide us with up to 350 kcal. Natural ingredients used in the production of ice cream are a source of many valuable nutrients for our body, such as dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Healthier alternative to traditional ice cream

As we are aware, authentic natural ice cream should be crafted from cream, milk, eggs, and possibly fresh fruit additives. Therefore, it is beneficial to familiarize oneself with the composition of ice cream and choose those with the shortest list of ingredients, signifying that we are not dealing with a highly processed product. Considering the ever-increasing importance that consumers attach to the composition and quality of products, food manufacturers are responding to these requirements, enriching frozen desserts, for example, with probiotic bacteria, which have a positive impact on our intestinal flora. Ice cream with decreased energy content is also highly popular. It is also feasible to prepare ice cream from natural food ingredients, enabling control over the amount of specific ingredients in the ice cream. Ice cream produced in this manner will not contain unnecessary and undesirable additives, such as artificial colorants or flavor enhancers. However, it is crucial to remember that ice cream remains a source of kilocalories, so we should also exercise moderation in consuming it even in the summer! Below, we present recipes for homemade ice cream.
