Toasties, being one of the most popular fast food dishes in Poland, are widely available in fast food bars and roadside stalls. We can also prepare this snack ourselves in domestic conditions. This article aims to answer the question of how many calories a toastie contains and to present methods for preparing a healthier variation of this meal.

Components of a classic bakery

A classic bakery comprises a baguette, baked mushrooms, and a substantial amount of yellow cheese. The additives of the bakery are often ketchup, sautéed onions, or various types of mayonnaise. Such a bakery is primarily a source of simple carbohydrates and saturated fats. Saturated fatty acids impact the increase in the total amount of cholesterol and its LDL fraction, which is associated with muscular changes. Frequent consumption of grain products made from refined flour, such as light bread, from which bakeries are usually prepared, and limiting the consumption of vegetables can also lead to an insufficient intake of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is an extremely important component that has a significant impact on our health, so its inadequate intake can lead to problems with digestion and an increased susceptibility to colon cancer. A standard portion of bakery is also characterized by a high energy value. Schroder H., Fito M., and Covas M. indicate in their studies that frequent consumption of fast-food meals is associated with an increase in body mass index, and therefore is a factor influencing the occurrence of overweight and obesity. One bakery weighs about 405 g and provides 867 kcal. Its nutritional value is as follows: – protein – 36 g, – fat – 49.4 g, – carbohydrates – 70.9 g, – fiber – 6.5 g.

A more healthful assortment of baked goods

Preparing baked goods at home in a somewhat modified, more healthful version is worthwhile.

The ingredients included are:

– 2 portions of sourdough bread (60 g), – two medium-sized tomatoes (340 g), – a teaspoon of olive oil (10 g), – a medium-sized onion (80 g), – a clove of garlic (8 g), – 2 slices of poultry ham (30 g), – 5 champignon mushrooms (100 g), – 4 olive pieces (12 g), – a piece of parmesan cheese (20 g), – half a handful of arugula (10 g), – herbs: basil, oregano.

The method of preparation

Create tomato sauce – heat a tablespoon of olive oil in the pan, add chopped onions and fry until soft, about 10 minutes. Then add peeled tomatoes, chopped garlic, oregano, and basil. Mix everything well, cover, and heat for 10-15 minutes on medium heat until the ingredients are completely dissolved. Spread tomato sauce on bread slices, then place ham and sautéed mushrooms on top. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan. Bake in the preheated oven at 200°C for about 10 minutes, until the bread is browned and the cheese is melted. You can arrange fresh arugula on the finished bruschettas.

What constituents does a homemade zapiekanka provide?

The modified version of the zapiekanka employs graham bread, which, in comparison to bacon, contains a larger quantity of insoluble dietary fibers. These fibers are responsible for enhancing digestive function and preventing constipation. The tomato sauce incorporates onions, which are a source of soluble fiber, which increases the sensation of fullness, lowers cholesterol, and aids in maintaining appropriate blood glucose levels. Tomatoes subjected to heat treatment contain a significant amount of lycopene, which prevents the development of diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Onions and garlic are also renowned for their antibacterial properties, which can aid the immune system in fighting infections. Olive oil is a source of monounsaturated fatty acids, which have a beneficial effect on the circulatory system. Parmesan, on the other hand, is a good source of calcium, responsible for bone condition, the transmission of nerve impulses, and muscle contractions. A portion of parmesan (20 g) covers up to 30% of an adult's daily calcium requirement. The homemade zapiekanka is also a dish rich in nutrients, containing appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and dietary fiber. Such a zapiekanka also has a lower energy content than a traditional zapiekanka. Thus, it is worth preparing zapiekankas oneself.
