Apple cider vinegar and its role in the weight reduction process
There is often a question about how apple cider vinegar affects the weight reduction process. Is it a magical remedy for obesity? Can it help us successfully get rid of excess weight? The answer, however, is simple and unsurprising, as it does not have such an effect. Nevertheless, due to its composition, it is a valuable product in our daily diet, but in no way can it replace a balanced diet that provides all necessary nutrients. Many “apple cider vinegar diets” are also based on increasing physical activity and regular meal intake, which in itself has a positive impact on the fight against obesity. In apple cider vinegar, one can find mainly polyphenol substances such as gallic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, and epicatechin.
Is it truly apple cider vinegar – when is it used and why?
Apart from its antioxidant activity, there are reports that apple cider vinegar has hypolipemic, hypoglycemic, or anticancer effects. However, studies in rats have shown that the consumption of vinegar had a positive effect on reducing total cholesterol and triglycerides in the serum. It has been shown to inhibit lipogenesis in the liver and to increase the release of bile acid in the feces. However, it should be noted that these studies were conducted on animals and cannot be directly translated to the human body. Scientific studies do not unequivocally confirm the hypoglycemic effect of apple cider vinegar. There are analyses that show that the consumption of vinegar had a statistically significant effect on reducing the total glucose level in the blood and increasing the glucose uptake in the muscles, but also those that do not confirm this effect. However, undeniably, apple cider vinegar slows down the gastric emptying process and increases the feeling of satiety. In studies on the effect of apple cider vinegar consumption on the development of colon cancer, a negative correlation was found. This may be due to the high content of flavonoids and other polyphenols, which can inhibit cancer initiation and cell proliferation. However, the consumption of apple cider vinegar is not recommended for people with gastroparesis.
How to properly use apple cider vinegar for health purposes?
In order to dilute apple cider vinegar, one should dissolve 2–3 teaspoons of it in a glass of hot water and consume it 2–3 times a day, before meals. In case of unpleasant taste, one can add a teaspoon of honey. Diluted apple cider vinegar can also be used as a salad dressing or a marinade for baked vegetables. Small amounts of apple cider vinegar, consumed in diluted form, have no negative impact on health. However, there is no concrete scientific evidence supporting the benefits of daily consumption. Serious conditions such as type II diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, or certain types of cancer are diet-dependent diseases. Their development is closely related to unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and other factors that negatively affect the body. Many of these diseases can be avoided by proper diagnosis and changes in dietary habits. In the case of existing complaints, a change in diet is often used as a therapeutic method. However, in the case of diseases that have been present for a long time, this may not be sufficient. In this case, a diet is an excellent starting point for a pharmacological treatment. When creating a clinical diet, all aspects of the disease are taken into consideration, including chronic treatment, medical recommendations, and test results. Depending on the type of problem, the appropriate components of the diet are selected to meet the body's needs as best as possible. A clinical diet creates optimal conditions for the body by providing the necessary nutrients and preventing deficiencies. Particular attention is paid to the right proportions of macronutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
