The Definition of HMB

HMB is a shortened form of hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate, which is translated into Polish as 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid. It is a substance that is a metabolite of leucine, a branched-chain amino acid that interacts with our muscles and initiates anabolic processes. During the metabolism of leucine, approximately 5% is converted into HMB. Since HMB is a substance that is primarily found and metabolized in muscles, the concept of supplementation was developed. However, the results of studies on its effectiveness have been mixed so far. Physiologically, this supplement initiates muscle protein synthesis and inhibits its degradation, and research conducted at the University of Poznań indicates that it may also have a significant impact on performance and body composition.

Scientific research method

The study involved 16 men who were members of the national rowing team. The requirements for participation in the study were good health and at least 5 years of training experience, as well as at least 5 rowing training sessions per week. The participants were divided into two groups. Over the course of 12 weeks, one group received 3 capsules containing Ca-HMB, a combination of calcium and HMB, which in the amount of 1000 mg in one capsule resulted in a daily dose of 3 g of HMB. The second group was a control group that received a placebo. A major advantage of the study was a 12-week follow-up with swapped groups. During the study, participants were not allowed to take any other ergogenic aids that could interfere with the effects of HMB and affect the results. Additionally, dietary logs were kept to ensure that the participants' diets were similar.

Attained Outcomes

Upon finishing the supplementation period, the research group documented positive changes in body composition, most notably an average loss of 0.9 kg of body fat. During the same timeframe, the placebo group recorded an average increase of 0.8 kg of fat. Both groups experienced some loss in muscle mass, however, the decrease for the placebo group was 2.1 kg, whereas HMB displayed an anti-catabolic effect, allowing only a loss of 1.0 kg of dry body weight. After 12 weeks of HMB intake, an improvement in oxygen level was also recorded. This is a parameter indicating the maximal oxygen uptake, which reflects an athlete's ability to perform aerobic exercises. Unfortunately, the ability to perform anaerobic training, measured on the wingate cycle ergometer, did not improve compared to the placebo group.

Effectiveness of HMB

The findings of the aforementioned study suggest that consuming 3 g of HMB for 12 weeks helps enhance physical performance and body composition in endurance athletes. However, the question of how β-hydroxy β-methylbutyric acid (HMB) works and why it is so effective remains unanswered. Unfortunately, there are numerous potential answers, but it is difficult to determine which one is correct and whether there is even a definitive answer. Since 1996, numerous studies have demonstrated that HMB leads to beneficial changes in body composition, which are associated with a decrease in markers of skeletal muscle damage, such as creatine kinase. However, Dr. Nélio Eidy Zanchi proposed a different mechanism of action based on the stimulation of cholesterol biosynthesis in muscle cells, which can then be used for the repair of cell membranes, which is crucial for post-workout regeneration. However, these are just examples, as other research groups have also shown that HMB can stimulate the anabolic kinase mTOR or inhibit the activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, protecting muscles from excessive breakdown.
