The macrobiotic diet is one of the oldest nutritional approaches rooted in Eastern tradition. It is based on the belief that carefully selected foods can enhance overall well-being, emotional balance, and health. These principles were thoroughly explained by George Ohsawa in his work 'Zen Macrobiotics'. What are its fundamental aspects?

The macrobiotic diet

The macrobiotic method can be broadly described as a low-protein vegetarian diet. Both diets have many things in common, but they differ in ideology and in the content of individual nutrients. The macrobiological diet created by George Ohsawa is based on the principles of Eastern philosophy and the dominant harmony maintained by the two opposing forces of Yin and Yang. It is not a typical fat-reducing diet, nor is it a medicinal diet.

The macrobiotic diet is the rule

The most important rules to be aware of in the context of macrobiotics are: absolute prohibition on the consumption of processed, frozen, artificially flavored or canned products. Ingredients should be as natural as possible; eating a large amount of seasonal vegetables (other than potatoes, tomatoes and bacon); striving to completely eliminate meat, dairy products (small quantities of fish are permitted); restricting fruit intake; consuming products in their entirety (if head and tail, if leaves and corn).

Manufacture in which all the materials used are wholly obtained

The macrobiotic method is based on the concept of Yin and Yang, which states that there are two opposing forces in the world that complement each other. Each food product is attributed to either Yin, or Yang, or neutral properties. According to the diet described, we should try to balance it so that we consume as many neutral products as possible. How do we divide food? The ones that have Yin properties are sugar, refined oils, milk and its derivatives, alcohol, black and tea. The products with Yang's characteristics are meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, and refined corn.

The macrobiotic diet has effects

The macrobiotic diet has not been developed as a way to reduce body weight. It is a holistic philosophy of life that allows us to live long, healthy and happy lives. George Ohsawa in his book Macrobiotics Zen states that the use of this method results in weight loss in people who are overweight or obese. He also describes that it has the effect of curing many diseases that conventional medicine considers incurable. However, is it true? It is difficult to recognize the macrobiotics diet as a philosophical or based on the basic dietary pyramid.
