Grapevine, also known as the common grapevine, is a climbing plant from the vitis family. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, alongside cereals, and has been grown for over 6000 years. In the food industry, the fruits and seeds are most commonly used. Less known, but equally valuable, are the grapevine leaves, which are used in the production of herbal medicine and dietary supplements and as an addition to salads and dishes in Balkan cuisine. What health benefits do grapes provide and why is it advisable to incorporate them into the diet?
Grapes: General Characteristics
Typically, two categories of grapes are distinguished: those intended for wine production (over 80%) and those intended for direct consumption as dessert fruits (about 10%). There is a great variety of grape varieties and species that differ from each other both in color (green, yellow, purple, pink, ruby) and in their intended use. The main component of grapes is water (70–85% by weight). In fresh grapes, we also find sugars (10–25%), dietary fiber, polyphenols, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, C, E, and K, as well as mineral salts such as zinc, iodine, fluorine, phosphorus, copper, manganese, potassium, selenium, and iron. Black grapes contain up to 169 mg of polyphenols in 100 g (M. Imran et al. 2017). Oil is made from the seeds, which is a source of vitamins A, E, and B6. This product contains about 90% unsaturated fatty acids, including 58–78% linoleic acid and 3–15% oleic acid. Significant amounts of plant phytosterols are also present – about 2600–11300 mg/kg (P. Goździk, M. Wroniak, A. Florowska 2020).
Health advantages of grape vines
The health benefits of consuming grapes are attributed to the antioxidants present in the fruit. The most important grape polyphenols are anthocyanins, flavanols, flavonoles, phenolic acids (coumarin, cinnamon, caffeine), stilbenes and resveratrol. These chemical compounds exhibit numerous biological properties, including antioxidant, cardioprotective, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and antibacterial effects. The highest antioxidant activity has been observed in grape seeds, somewhat less in the skin and least in the pulp. Resveratrol is primarily found in the red and dark red skin of grapes, and extracts from the seeds can be a promising source of antioxidants in dietary supplements.
Grapes and diseases of civilization
Research conducted in 2022 suggested that incorporating grapes into the diet by 2 cups per day could have numerous health benefits. The experiment was carried out on mice (progress in obesity and metabolic disorders in these rodents is similar to obesity in humans). The diet was high in fat, thus adhering to the Western pattern. The study found that supplementing the mouse diet with grape powder (5% per day) could have a number of health benefits. The experiment also included 300 grams of grapes in humans with a body weight of 70 kg. The research showed that grape supplementation in long-term diets and dietary extracts could help increase the expression of fat extracts in the diet. The study also showed that extracts of grapes in long-term diets can increase the risk of heart disease.
Sour cherries and neurodegenerative diseases
Consumption of sour cherries may lead to improved memory and brain function. Over the past several decades, polyphenol-rich foods in sour cherries have been shown to protect against age-related diseases such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, epilepsy, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or Alzheimer's disease. Anthocyanins and polyphenols found in sour cherries have shown beneficial effects as anti-aging compounds by modulating the characteristics of aging (oxidative processes, inflammatory processes, shortening of telomerases, and cells).
Vineyards – an overview
Vineyards not only possess a taste that delights the taste buds, but they also have a multitude of health benefits, which have been proven by numerous scientific studies. They are significant in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. It is noteworthy that not only fresh fruits, but also juices and oils derived from grapes offer health benefits. Due to their high content of vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols, grapes have a beneficial effect on the human body, hence it is worth considering their consumption as part of a diet.
