Oftentimes, people struggle to remember the surname of a newly met person, which can result in awkward and uncomfortable situations. However, there is a method that can aid in recalling surnames. Research published in Consciousness and Cognition has scientifically proven the effectiveness of this method.

An effective technique for memorizing names: How active repetition reinforces new information

Among the myriad strategies designed to facilitate the memorization of a newly acquainted individual’s name, one prominent recommendation is to direct full attention to the interlocutor, pose a question that elucidates their personality traits, and—critically—to verbally articulate their name on multiple occasions. This final approach, widely recognized as one of the most effective techniques for consolidating newly acquired information, was subjected to empirical validation. Researchers in France conducted a controlled study in which participating university students were tasked with memorizing sequences of words displayed on a computer screen. To eliminate the influence of self-auditory feedback, subjects wore noise-canceling headphones that prevented them from hearing their own voice. The experiment incorporated four distinct memorization conditions: (1) silent mental repetition, (2) whispered articulation with lip movement, (3) vocalization while gazing at the screen, and (4) verbalizing the content aloud to another person. The findings revealed that the latter method—active information sharing—yielded the highest retention rates. From a practical standpoint, this suggests that during a conversation with someone newly met, it is beneficial not only to repeatedly use their name but also, upon concluding the interaction, to recount the encounter to a third party, thereby reinforcing memory retention. Naturally, the intention is to engage in constructive reflection rather than gossip. When combined with mnemonic techniques, this method can significantly accelerate the learning process and the assimilation of new data, a conclusion supported by cognitive research.
