Muesli is a very popular product, especially among people who follow a diet. It consists of grains, fruits, seeds, and nuts. Various muesli blends can be found in stores, which often contain a large amount of other additives, including a large amount of sugar. Is it even worth consuming muesli, and if so, which one should be chosen during shopping?

High nutritional value

The nutritional value of muesli depends on its composition, which may vary for each product. The mixture may include: grains (oats, barley, rye, wheat, millet, orchids, etc.), dried fruits (dates, prunes, grains, raisins, morels, figs, etc.) and seeds and nuts (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame, flaxseed, hazelnuts, peas, pistachios, almonds etc.). Muesli can play an important role in nutrition by combining complex carbohydrates and proteins with rich vitamins and minerals. The caloric content of different muesli types available on the Polish market ranges from 340-460 kcal/100 g. The majority of the product consists of carbohydrates – 100 g contains an average of 60-70 g. These are mainly complex carbohydrates (starch) that are slowly digested in the digestive tract, resulting in a slow rise in blood sugar levels and prolonged energy supply. If the mixture consists of whole-grain flakes, the product is also a rich source of dietary fiber. Seeds and nuts in the composition are a source of healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Rich source of dietary fiber

A blend of mussels in a quantity of 100 grams contains an average of 7-10 grams of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber constitutes an indigestible carbohydrate that serves as a food source for gut microflora. This fiber aids in the elimination of toxins, cholesterol, triglycerides, and excess bile acids from the body. Additionally, it decreases the calorie content in the diet and provides a feeling of satiety through its swelling properties in the intestines. It binds feces and regulates its excretion, preventing the accumulation of fecal matter in the digestive tract.

A source of nutrients

Muesli is an excellent source of nutrients, and its properties depend on the ingredients used. Common ingredients in muesli mixtures include oatmeal, which is a high-nutrient and high-energy-dense product providing vitamins of the B group such as B1, B2, B3, B6, folic acid, and Vitamin E, as well as mineral ingredients such as zinc, calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium; nuts, which are a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, protein, and vitamins of the B group, Vitamin E, zinc, potassium, iron, and calcium - particularly almonds and sesame are rich in calcium; dried plums, which provide calcium and potassium, positively affecting heart function and the nervous system, regulating digestion, and being effective in case of constipation; dates, which contain a lot of sugar, provitamin A, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and are an excellent source of soluble fiber that helps with constipation; raisins, which provide vitamins of the B group, regulate metabolism, support the work of the nervous system, and are a source of potassium.
