In den 1950er Jahren startete Ancel Keys seine Forschungen, die aufzeigten, dass die Bewohner des Mittelmeerraums seltener an Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen leiden als die US-Bevölkerung. Basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen und weiteren Studien kam der Wissenschaftler zu dem Schluss, dass die Mittelmeer-Diät gesundheitsfördernd ist.

The traditional diet of the inhabitants of the Mediterranean basin (from the 1960s) is characterized by a high content of vegetables, fruits, cereal products, grain seeds of legumes.
