The liver is the largest internal organ in our body and is responsible for numerous critical functions. It produces bile, which is involved in digesting fats, accumulates and releases carbohydrates, and also generates plasma proteins. The liver is also engaged in cholesterol metabolism, inactivation of certain hormones, the synthesis of pro-vitamin D, and is involved in the detoxification of many substances (including alcohol and drugs). [1] The liver is an organ of paramount importance, and its proper functioning can be supported by a well-balanced diet and the use of appropriate medicinal herbs.

Herbs Supporting Liver Function

Herbal medicine, also known as phytotherapy, is a therapeutic approach utilizing health-promoting plants. It employs plants in various forms, with their efficacy and medicinal value depending on the quantity and quality of their active compounds. Herbs and isolated plant substances used in the phytotherapeutic treatment of the liver and biliary tract can be categorized into five groups: those with choleretic and cholekinetic effects, those with spasmolytic properties protecting the liver parenchyma (hepatoprotective), including anti-inflammatory and regenerative agents, those with antibacterial and antiviral properties (for liver and biliary tract infections), and those with antiparasitic and protozoal effects (against biliary system parasites) [2].

Herbs for liver detoxification support

The liver plays a vital role in detoxifying the body by eliminating harmful substances such as toxins, alcohol, and medications. When the organ is overburdened, the removal of these harmful compounds becomes challenging. In such cases, it is beneficial to support liver function with herbs that enhance detoxification. One of the most effective herbs for liver detoxification is milk thistle, which exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and cholesterol-lowering properties. Research confirms that milk thistle extract protects the liver and enhances its functionality. Additionally, milk thistle reduces bilirubin levels, liver enzymes (ALT, AST), cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL and VLDL lipoprotein fractions, while simultaneously increasing HDL levels and antioxidant enzymes. Another plant that aids in liver detoxification is spotted hemlock, which alters the structure of liver cell membranes, preventing toxin penetration. As a result, the liver experiences less stress and operates more efficiently. Besides milk thistle and spotted hemlock, other herbs that have demonstrated efficacy in liver detoxification include black radish root, turmeric, boldine, and berberine.

Herbal support for liver regeneration

The liver's intricate metabolic processes stem from its vital role in blood filtration, making it susceptible to damage from toxins, parasites, and viruses. Researchers are therefore exploring agents that can protect and regenerate this organ. [4] Silymarin, derived from milk thistle, exhibits hepatoprotective effects by enhancing glutathione production and mitigating inflammation. [5] This plant also contains flavonoids, tannins, and minerals that further improve liver function. [4] The artichoke, rich in cynarin, similarly supports liver regeneration. [6] Honey, when combined with herbs, can aid both detoxification and liver repair. [7] Given the liver's essential role in the body, incorporating herbs with regenerative properties is advisable.
