What is luteolin?

Luteolin is a chemical compound that belongs to a large group of compounds known as flavonoids. These organic compounds are mainly found in plant organisms and form a subgroup of substances called polyphenols, which I have previously mentioned in the context of antioxidation and combating free radicals in the body. Luteolin, as a polyphenol, exhibits antioxidant properties, similar to quercetin and resveratrol, which are responsible for neutralizing free radicals that cause disease processes and accelerate aging. In addition, luteolin has a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, which is important in autoimmune diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. Luteolin is also effective in promoting urine production. However, the most important property of luteolin is its ability to inhibit the activation of microglia, a group of cells in the central nervous system responsible for controlling homeostasis and a component of the body's immune response. Microglia monitors the micro-environment of tissues and removes dead neurons, but in the aging process, it becomes dysregulated, leading to an overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines responsible for the death of neuronal cells. This can contribute to cognitive impairments and the development of neurological diseases. Therefore, luteolin is an effective protective agent for our brain and mental health.

Scope of luteolin applications

Based on available information, it can be assumed that luteolin is primarily used in diseases of the nervous system. In the literature, diseases such as autism, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, dementia of old age, memory and concentration difficulties, as well as mental disorders, are frequently mentioned. Scientists sometimes also mention the possibility of using the anti-inflammatory character of this substance to limit the spread of cancer processes.

Viewpoints of the European Parliament and of the Council

In scientific studies, one can encounter references to luteolin. In the work of Ren et al. from 2013, the authors mention that luteolin may slow down the effect planned by the body of accelerated death of nerve cells in the hippocampus. A similar study, also conducted on mice, showed that supplementation with luteolin for four weeks improved learning and memory processes in these animals. In older individuals, a restoration of these processes (i.e., memory) to a similar state as in younger creatures was observed. However, the most significant results are those of the work of Xu et al., who conducted research on the influence of luteolin on long-term synaptic potentiation. LTP (eng. long-term potentiation) is a process in which the transmission of signals between neurons is enhanced. This mechanism forms the basis for functions such as learning and memory. In this study, it was proven that luteolin not only directly affects the formation of LTP but also protects nerve synapses.
