Alpha-lipoic acid, alternatively referred to as thioctic acid, serves a pivotal function in adjunctive therapy for a spectrum of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, and elevated blood pressure. What risks are associated with its supplementation, including potential adverse effects and circumstances where its use is contraindicated? Furthermore, how does the product landscape appear within the United Kingdom—what formulations are currently accessible, and within what price range can they be procured?

Alpha-lipoic acid properties

Alpha-liponic acid (abbreviated as R-ALA) is an organic compound of the carboxylic acid group. It was once considered a vitamin, but the fact that the body (both plant and animal) is capable of its endogenous synthesis has led to its exclusion from this group. The results of numerous studies conducted using R- ALA have provided important information about its properties. However, it has been shown that alpha-liphon has significant antioxidant effects (neutral to free acid and supports the body's endocrine system), anti-oxidant and anti-aging effects.

Alpha-lipoic acid side effects

Although alpha-liponic acid is a compound that is synthesized in the body and in small amounts naturally occurring in certain food products (mainly broccoli, spinach, pork, beef), as any compound taken as a supplement may have certain side effects. Although they are harmless and occur mainly in the case of an overdose, it should be noted that the possible side effects of these side effects are most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract (especially diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain). As with many other supplements, caution should be exercised when taking pregnant women and carcinogens, which can lead to an increase in the appetite of the elderly.

Alpha-lipoic acid preparations

Alpha-lipoic acid is available on the Polish market in stores with dietary supplements, most often online. The most popular form of R-ALA is capsules, which vary depending on the manufacturer with the content of lipoic acid.

Alpha-lipoic acid price

The price of the supplement depends on the R-ALA content and the number of items in the pack. The average price of 60 capsules containing 600 mg alpha-lipoic acid is about PLN 50. The price also varies depending on the manufacturer.
