Highly regarded by Greek and Roman physicians since antiquity for its exceptional health-promoting attributes, sweet marjoram essential oil remains a valuable component of natural medicine cabinets. Its consistent use may contribute to reinforcing the body’s immune defenses while reducing susceptibility to bacterial, viral, and fungal infectious diseases.

Oregano oil

It comes from the leaves and flowers of oregano. There are dozens of species of this plant, but the most beneficial is the oil produced from wild oregana or Origanum vulgare, which comes from Mediterranean regions. This oil has a high content of phenolics (e.g. karwakrol, tymol), which are natural phytochemicals with beneficial antioxidant properties, thus strengthening the immune system and acting against bacterial infections.

The properties of oregano oil

Oregano oil has a wide range of health benefits, preventing infections such as: urinary tract infections caused by bacteria such as E. coli, Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Respiratory infection cause by strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus yeast infections, even those that are resistant to the commonly used antifungal drug Diflucan.

Oregano oil has side effects

Olive oil should be avoided by people who are allergic to mint, lavender, sage or basil because oregano comes from the same family and can cause allergic reactions. Some people may experience indigestion after consuming it. It is also not recommended for infants and children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also not use it as it may stimulate blood circulation in the uterus.

How to use oregano oil?

The oil can be used locally or used in the kitchen, depending on the health condition and the reason for its use. It should not be applied to wounded skin or open wounds. Oregano is best known as a spice, but it is worth getting the oil from the plant, as studies show it has a healing effect. It will help with both infections and skin irritations.
