5 recipes for excellent revitalizing beverages

The vacation period requires special attention to hydration... High temperatures lead to intense sweating... and along with sweat, we lose not only water but also mineral salts... Below are 5 recipes for excellent revitalizing beverages.

Table of Contents

1. Water - Functions and Requirements

Water is indispensable to numerous bodily processes, playing a critical role in every cell of the human body. Its primary functions include maintaining a constant body temperature, detoxifying the body, and regulating the acid-base and water-electrolyte balance. Recommended norms suggest that an adult Pole should consume around 2.5 liters of water daily, while an adult Polish woman should consume 2 liters. These amounts also include fluids found in food. Water requirements can vary and depend on factors such as ambient temperature, diet, and type of physical activity. Greater consumption of water-rich products, such as fruits and vegetables, can lower water requirements. In cases such as high ambient temperature, fever, constipation, diarrhea, high-fiber and high-protein diets, and increased physical activity, water requirements may be higher.

2. Water and Electrolyte Metabolism

Water in the body is present together with electrolytes, such as salt, potassium, chlorine, hydrocarbons, phosphates and proteins. It is present in outer and inner cell fluids. Water scarcity leads to water-electrolyte imbalance, resulting in changes in the volume of outer- and inner-cell fluids and osmotic pressure. Water is transported either from the digestive tract to the plasma or vice versa. The direction in which it flows depends on the difference in osmolality between the plasma and the nutrient content in the gut. Osmolality is the amount of dissolved active molecules in the fluid, such as glucose and sodium. Normal osmolality in the plasma is 281–297 mOsm/kg of water. Water flows from an area of lower osmolality to an area of higher osmolality. The main regulator of water absorption is sodium.

3. Dehydration – ramifications

Our body is unable to store excess water, therefore it is essential to supply it regularly from external sources. It is recommended to consume it in small amounts throughout the day. The body has defense mechanisms against dehydration, such as increased absorption of sodium, which allows more water to pass from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. Maintaining the balance of water and electrolyte metabolism is crucial for the proper functioning of the body. A lack of water can lead to serious health disorders, including disorders of concentration, memory, decreased activity level, decreased appetite, and thermoregulation. Even a small decrease in the level of water in the body can lead to serious consequences, including excessive drowsiness and irritability. Dehydration at a level above 8% can have fatal consequences.

4. Isotonic beverages, recognized for their water absorption capacity

Isotonic beverages are widely recognized for their water absorption capacity, which is more effective than pure water. Due to their content of carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins, isotonic beverages allow for fast and efficient water absorption. The isotonic solubility is similar to that of body fluids, enabling effective rehydration. Isotonic beverages are recommended to athletes for effectively replenishing fluids and electrolytes lost during physical exertion. The isotonic solution should be composed to balance mineral components, restore water-electro balance, provide energy, and enable quick gastric emptying.

5. Proposal for a homemade isotonic

– water 1 litre, – natural honey 75 grams (3 tablespoons), – lemon 80 grams (1 piece), – salt 1 gram (pinch), – mint (a few leaves). Time required for preparation: 5 minutes. Squeeze the lemon juice. Combine all ingredients.

6. Delicious thirst-quenching drinks

If you're not engaged in high-intensity physical activity, you don't have to resort to isotonic drinks. Water with fruit, vegetables, or herbs added is enough. Water with hydrating additives is very well hydrated and refreshes on hot days. Adding fruit, vegetables, and herbs changes the taste of the water, which is more intense the longer the drink remains in the refrigerator. This is a great alternative for people who don't like the taste of pure water. Additionally, water with berries or citrus fruits provides vitamin C, which is a strong antioxidant and is essential for collagen synthesis. It is advisable to choose highly mineralized waters for the preparation of flavored waters, which provide more than 1500 mg of mineral components per liter. They supplement diets with mineral components such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium.

7. Raspberries with Lemon
