Will the soylent initiate a breakthrough in our nourishment?

Over the past few decades, there has been a significant development in the manner in which we ingest food and approach our nourishment. Society is increasingly cognizant of the impact of lifestyle on health. Regrettably, many individuals, due to the rapid pace of life, obligations, and excessive stress, lack time for healthy sustenance or physical activity. Technological innovations and new solutions come to the rescue, enabling the facilitation and optimization of daily nourishment to provide the necessary amounts of macro and micronutrients, but also not squander time on meal preparation or substitution.

1. What are Soylent-style products?

Soylent-style products are a general term for products intended to replace a full meal. They can come in the form of powder that needs to be mixed with water or milk, or as ready-to-eat meals. Most of them provide 200-400 kcal and offer an adequate amount of nutrients such as fiber, mineral ingredients, vitamins, and macronutrients, which include protein, fats, and carbohydrates. A serving can cover up to 10-50% of the demand for individual nutrients. Thanks to modern technology, Soylent-style products can have different flavors and textures. The main sources of carbohydrates are usually oats, tapioca, potatoes, corn, or rice.

2. Advantages of utilizing soylents

Soylents are widely recognized for their numerous advantages, the most significant of which is the convenient preparation. It takes less than a minute to prepare a meal that can be taken anywhere. Soylents are also an excellent source of nutrients and protein. Replacing one or two daily meals with soylents can aid in faster weight reduction than with standard reduction diets (G. López Barrón et al., 2011). Furthermore, individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes who utilized soylents had lower LDL cholesterol levels (J.B. Keogh, P.M. Clifton, 2012).

3. Drawbacks and limitations of soylent products

Although soylent products are a convenient alternative to traditional meals, they also have a number of drawbacks and limitations. They are synthetic and highly processed products, which can make it difficult for the body to absorb their components. Furthermore, their uniform consistency and taste may not encourage consumption, leading to a lack of satisfaction with food. The long-term effects of consuming soylent products are also unknown, as they are still a relatively new product on the market. Moreover, consuming soylent products for weight loss may not provide lasting results, as they do not contribute to improving dietary habits. It is also important to remember that some soylent products contain false information on the label and may be contaminated with heavy metals.

4. How much does it cost?

Dietary drinks available on the Polish market have an average cost of around 8 to 12 PLN per meal. While using them once or twice a day does not appear to be an expensive solution, especially when compared to dining in a restaurant, regularly using them as a replacement for all meals throughout the day may prove to be less cost-effective.

5. What to focus on when selecting soylents

When selecting a product, it is advisable to first check the contents of the macronutrients and choose them according to one's lifestyle. For example, physically active individuals should opt for products with high protein content. Another important aspect is the sugar content, which should not be present in the composition. The best choice are products made from natural ingredients and containing as few artificial preservatives or colorants as possible. However, it is important to note that sometimes their addition is necessary in order for the product to maintain its durability and appropriate consistency, so there is no need to search for soylents that are completely devoid of artificial additives. To ensure that the chosen product is of the highest quality, it is advisable to opt for the one that has been additionally tested or examined. Such information should be provided on the packaging. Sometimes one may encounter meal replacement products that have been enriched with additional health-promoting ingredients – this is also an additional advantage. Before making a final decision, it is worth becoming familiar with the opinions of other users, which can be found, for example, on the Internet. And most importantly, one should choose the product according to individual taste preferences and also take into account any allergies or intolerances.

6. Summary

Soylents are products that can be effectively utilized as substitutes for individual meals. They encompass all essential nutrients, making them a significantly better alternative than fast food or snacks available in stores. However, it is crucial to remember that they should not serve as the basis of a diet. The long-term consequences of their excessive consumption remain insufficiently understood, and the manufacturers themselves emphasize that meal replacements should function solely as a supplement to a balanced diet.
