1. Aronia and its health properties
Aronia is a plant that is perfectly suited for organic cultivation, is resistant to pests and diseases, does not require the use of plant protection products. A high content of procyanidins belonging to the tannin group makes the fruits of this plant sour. The characteristic tightening sensation that occurs after consuming Aronia results from the interaction between tannins and proteins of the mucous membrane as well as taste receptors of the tongue. Ripe Aronia is one of the richest sources of polyphenols, most of which are anthocyanins. The average content of polyphenols in 100 g of fruit is 2080 mg, compared to an average of 560 mg of polyphenols in 100 g of black currants and only 126 mg in 100 g of raspberries. Of course, the content depends on the variety, growing conditions, and harvest time. Aronia owes its strong antioxidant and anticancer properties to the content of anthocyanins, catechins and their polymers, as well as phenolic acids. Thanks to these compounds, it is possible to bind heavy metal ions, inhibit the action of enzymes responsible for oxidation processes in the body, interrupt reactions with free radicals, and neutralize them. This prevents the development of inflammations, infections, metabolic diseases, cancer, and promotes general immunity. It has also been shown that consuming Aronia in appropriate amounts can significantly affect the course of radiation sickness and increase survival. The effect is based, among other things, on inhibiting the generation of free radicals, especially the hydrogen peroxide radical. Aronia fruits also find application in cosmetics - in the production of gels that protect the skin from UV radiation.2. Beverage made from aronia - healthy diet for diabetics
Aronia and its derivatives play a significant role in the diet of diabetics. One of the great benefits of the aronia beverage is its ability to lower the glycemic index of a simple sugar solution. The anthocyanins contained in aronia increase the sensitivity of peripheral cells to insulin, while chlorogenic acid, which is also present in aronia fruits, inhibits the absorption of glucose from the small intestine. Consuming aronia can have an impact on reducing the activity of maltose and sucrose in the mucous membrane of the small intestine. Clinical studies have confirmed a positive effect of aronia on the condition of people with diabetes. Aronia also plays an important role in the diet of people with metabolic syndrome, as it not only lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels, but also lowers blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory properties. Aronia products are a recommended addition for diabetics and people who care about their eye health. Their benefits have been proven in both laboratory and clinical studies.3. Fruit-derived goods entirely made from aronia berries
The collection of aronia berries should take place from mid-August to the end of September. Juices, jams, jellies, dried fruits for fruit teas and liquors are produced from them. They can be easily prepared at home. The greatest amount of antioxidants and routine, which is responsible for strengthening the walls of blood vessels, is contained in freshly pressed aronia juice. However, if you do not like the slightly bitter taste, you must freeze the collected aronia berries and then prepare a paste from them. The addition of lemon juice to aronia juice improves its flavor, enriches it with vitamin C and ensures a favorable pH. Alternatively, the fruits can be dried, e.g. in the oven, for several hours at 50-60°C or left in a warm and dry place on food plastic wrap. From these fruits, tea can be easily prepared by pouring boiling water over them. In Poland, the range of aronia products is quite limited. In pharmacies, you can buy dried aronia berries in powder form as a sugar-free dietary supplement.
