What is Nutri-Score

For several years now, you have been able to find products on Polish store shelves with a coloured letter scale and a distinctive element on it.

1. Nutri-Score is the definition

Nutri-Score is a product labelling system located on the front of the packaging (Fronf-of-Pack Label, FoPL) developed and launched in France in 2017. It was established to help consumers make informed food choices by providing information on the nutritional quality of products. It is based on a food classification point (denoted by the letters AE). Additionally, it uses colour labelling ranging from dark brown (group A, or products with the highest nutrient acidity) through orange to simple orange (groups C, intermediate ingredients) to red (green, lowest to lowest ingredients). It is awarded as an advantageous value in each of the following categories: 1) the value of the products used in the system is calculated as the sum of the benefits of each product (from 1 to 100 mL) and 2) the benefit of the resulting products from the use of the product as well as the results of each category of products: 1) 1 to 10 mL; 2) the disadvantages in each category are given as a disadvantageous value for each product, and 3) in each case: 1)

2. Nutri-Score has its advantages

Among the advantages of Nutri-Score is its location on the front of the packaging it is easier to see because it does not require the product to be removed from the shelf. A positive aspect is also a simple design based on letter markings (AE) that will be understandable to the inhabitants of many countries. Its interpretation requires no extensive knowledge of the nutrients and data analysis, which makes it an alternative to the nutritional value tables found in these packages, which are difficult for many consumers to read.

3. Nutri-Score defects

The Nutri-Score system also has some drawbacks. The main problem is the limited number of aspects that are taken into account when awarding points. They do not take into account, for example, the content of vitamins and minerals, the degree of processing, or the presence of food additives such as colours or preservatives. This may lead to a situation where higher nutritional value products receive more points (and hence a worse result) than low-value products. For example, they may be a salty source, hence, due to the higher sugar content of the food products from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables, this may not be possible in the usual way.

It is worth noting that Nutri-Score is not the only system for graphically marking the nutritional value of a product.

5. Other popular rocks

Reference Intakes presents data on nutrient content (kilocalories, fats, saturated fat, salts and simple sugars) in numerical form and shows the extent to which they achieve a Reference Consumption Value (RWS). The colour of the indication is neutral. Mutiple Traffic Lights similar to the reference intakes; it presents the same data but is additionally coloured the high content of the ingredient is red, the mean colour is black, the average colour brown and the green colour n green.

6. Nutri-Score effectiveness

Nutri-Score was presented to the participants during the survey 3 sets of products of different categories (pizza, breakfast cereals, and cakes); each consisting of 3 fictitious products that had a reduced effect on the consumer. However, the initial reviews had no effect, and the respondents were asked to arrange them in order from the highest to the lowest food quality. Subsequently, the participants were presented with the same set of products as the survey participants, but the results of the same product were not enough to be seen as a single product, as well as to be viewed as a unified brand by the US, the US and the US.

7. Nutri-Score in Poland

By 2022, the Nutri-Score System has also been implemented by other countries Belgium, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

8. Summary

Nutri-Score is a relatively new tool designed to make food choices easier. The label is easy to interpret, which can be helpful especially for those with less knowledge about food, for whom the information contained in the nutritional value tables can be difficult to understand.
