Watch out for harmful food additives!

An additive is a substance that is not consumed separately as a food, is not a typical food ingredient, whether or not it has nutritional value. Its intended technological use in the process of production, processing, preparation, packaging, transport and storage of food causes or may cause that substance to become, directly or indirectly, an ingredient in food or its components.

1. Is it even possible that the amount of additional substances can exceed the standards?

On the basis of the opinion of the Committee of Experts on Food Additives and Pollutants, it sets the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for each substance. Additional substances for which no acceptable doses have been given should be used in accordance with good manufacturing practice, i.e. in the minimum quantities necessary to achieve the intended technological effect.

2. Types of food additives

Additives that affect the appearance of a product are intended to increase its commercial appeal. Their excess may be harmful. They prolong the shelf life but may be detrimental to the consumer if they are in excess. They may also produce emulsions, e.g. to facilitate the blending of water and oil in the product. They are used in the manufacture of cakes, ice cream, water, soups, fish products, meat preservatives, low-calorie products of various characteristics. E600 additives to enhance flavor, taste and to reduce unpleasant odors. 3. Substances added to food Summary

They cause allergic reactions, which are very common. When purchasing, you should choose products that have a detailed description of their composition. All groups of chemicals added to food should be safe for health. It happens that the consumption of certain food additives has adverse effects, including an allergic reaction or irritation of the food chain. You should select products that are free of or contain at least any artificial additive. However, changes in the organoleptic properties of products affect the choice during purchases, not always in accordance with the essential value of the product.
