Thyme is a well-known plant in Poland, valued primarily for its culinary qualities. It is an extremely aromatic herb that can enrich the taste of many dishes. Interestingly, thyme also has many medicinal properties that have been known since ancient times.

Table of Contents

1. The name of the characteristic

Thymus vulgaris (L.), also known as the common moth, comes from the Mediterranean region where it grows wild. Its name is derived from the Greek word thymon, meaning bold. It is a medium-sized crop growing to a height of 2540 cm. It grows in many regions of the world, including Poland. Its characteristic pleasant aroma is particularly strong in flavor. It has dark grey leaves, but it also contains an active herb and tiny flowers.

2. It has medicinal properties

It was used in Egypt for the mummification of cadavers and as an incense. The Greeks used it for the treatment of lung diseases and venereal diseases, while the ancient Romans used it to treat cough, cough or shortness of breath. It was also used as a medicinal plant in the Ebersa papyrus (ancient Egyptian medical manual). Today, these herbs are also used primarily to treat diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract.

3. Counter-indications

Thyme oil has many benefits, but not everyone can benefit from its beneficial properties. Pregnant women should not use thyme oil or very large amounts of thyme because it can stimulate uterine contractions. Small children and people with hypertension should also not use the oil. Large doses of plants or intense inhalations can cause nausea, vomiting or headache. However, it is safe for children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women alike.

4. Dishes in the kitchen

It is often used in French, Italian, or Spanish cuisines. It is perfectly combined with meat dishes (mainly wild and poultry), it is also used to season fish and seafood (seagulls have a good marinade flavor), the best, grilled dishes or strawberries. It's also used in marinades and as an ingredient.
