Vegetables and fruits should be an essential part of the daily diet. They are a treasure trove of valuable vitamins, fiber, minerals and antioxidants. Including them in the diet reduces the risk of diseases of civilization, e.g. cardiovascular disease or cancer. According to the recommendations of the National Institute of Hygiene (NIS), a minimum of 400 g of vegetables and fruit should be included in meals every day. To enjoy the properties and taste of these products, it is important to know which fruits and vegetables to choose when shopping.

1. Where to buy fruit and vegetables

One of the solutions is to start your own garden, but not everyone can afford it. We don't always have the time and place. Whether we buy at the market or in the grocery store, it's worth looking at the seasonality of vegetables and fruits. For consumers, the most important characteristics when choosing vegetables or fruits are their quality and appearance. Many people prefer to shop at bazaars or fairs, because the origin of the product has also become important, the conditions under which it was grown, and the time it spent before it went on sale.

2. How to choose fruit?

Fruits sold in stores and markets should be of high quality and should also be safe for the health of consumers. So how can we know if the fruit we buy is fresh?

3. Bananas

Yellow bananas will contain high amounts of simple sugars, so they are not recommended for people with carbohydrate disorders. However, yellow bananas are rich in antioxidants that protect against free radicals. Green bananas contain much less sugar than yellow. They are also rich in resistant starch, which has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the intestines. On store shelves we can also find bananas with brown spots.

4. It's an apple

They should be characterized by their appropriate shape, size and colour (depending on the variety). When shopping, make sure that the apples are whole, without damage, wrinkles on the skin or visible traces of spoilage.

5. Fruits of citrus fruit

is an important source of antioxidants affecting the proper functioning of the body. This group of fruits includes citrus fruits, grapefruits or oranges. The maturity of lemons is indicated by their size and not the color of the skin. The ripeness of the lemons, depending on the variety, should be about 6 cm in diameter. The fruit of the lemon should be egg-shaped and have a distinctive peak. The peak should be thick and yellow in color.

In this group of fruits, we distinguish strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, berries, legumes, grapefruits, grapes, and oranges. it's a low-nutrient plant, but it has a unique taste. There are different varieties of cucumbers available, which have different uses. You can find pickles for preservation, pickling, or fresh consumption. Among the most commonly purchased are salad pickles. They are usually long, about 18 20 cm long.

It is an easily digestible vegetable, rich in beta-carotene, which is why it has antioxidant properties.

12. Potatoes

They are not only cheap but also tasteful and high in nutritional value. It is worth paying attention to the origin of potatoes and choosing native products. In stores we can find early and late potatos. Early varieties should have thin skin. Late potatos produce cork, which makes the vegetables more durable and can be stored for longer.

The following varieties of beans stand out: sugary, pasteurized, peanut, as well as chamomile. When shopping, let's first pay attention to the color of peanut beans, which, depending on the variety, should have a colour ranging from reddish-brown to purple-orange.

14. What else should you pay attention to when buying fruit and vegetables?

Let's take a closer look at the fruits and vegetables that we're going to buy. Don't pick the damaged or overgrown ones, because this could indicate that the product contains unfavorable pathogens that will affect their quality. We should also reject vegetables and fruits that show mold traces. Vegetables and fruit sold in packaging and pre-treated should be stored in cold conditions. It's also worth checking the eligibility date for these products because they're not sustainable.
