The psychological conditions of obesity

It's incredibly difficult to treat, and yet you still hear that you only need to eat less and move more to heal. Obesity is becoming an increasingly common problem, both among adults and children. Why are so many people unable to cope with this problem? It is a serious disease that has many negative health consequences, and it also increases the risk of many other diseases.

1. Obesity is general information

Obesity is classified on the basis of body mass index (BMI). Its prevalence is increasing worldwide, but its highest percentage is recorded in Western countries where a high-processed and energetic diet is dominant. According to the GUS, the percentage of women suffering from obesity in Poland is 15.2% and men 18.1%. Based on the available data, it can be concluded that about 21% of women in the general population have more frequent eating disorders.

2. Obesity is the cause

On the other hand, secondary obesity is determined by factors of a genetic, metabolic, or hormonal nature. These can be categorized into three main categories: genetic, environmental, cultural, and psychological factors. The first is related to excess body weight resulting from improper eating habits. The causes of obesity are usually very complex and often overlapping.

3. Genetic causes of obesity

The incidence of this disease in a single parent increases the likelihood of a child becoming ill by up to 5 times. Obesity is also significantly influenced by gender, it affects women more often, probably because of lower energy requirements, a greater tendency to eat low-calorie diets that lead to the yo-yo effect, eating disorders, and naturally more body fat. When obesity occurs in children, there is a high risk that it will accompany them throughout their lives.

4. Environmental and cultural causes of obesity

There is no doubt that obesity is in many cases the result of environmental factors; however, cultural factors include: widespread advertising of high-fat products with high levels of contamination, a celebration of value that focuses largely on moderate consumption, or a willingness to treat food as a form of affection for individuals and other groups of people. There are also macro-economic factors, such as microbial and other factors, that can affect the health of people (e.g. microbiological or economic factors).

5. Obesity is a treatment

It's a disease that involves many different areas of functioning, and that's why it's necessary to work with professionals from different fields to get the best out of it. Unfortunately, in many cases, the treatment process is difficult and frustrating for the patient, and lifestyle changes are too difficult to sustain, which leads to withdrawal. So psychological help and environmental support are invaluable.

6. Obesity is an effect

However, it is an extremely dangerous disease that is chronic and affects the whole body. This is why it is so important to know all the possible determinants of this disease. There is no doubt that obesity increases the likelihood not only of other diseases but also of overall mortality. American scientists have found that more than half of the deaths among women with a BMI of over 29 kg/m2 are directly related to obesity (M.S. Studies also show that among people who do not sleep, obesity is twice as likely to cause mortality in people with body mass disorders (e.g. whether obesity tends to be a single disease that does not affect their body weight as a whole.

7. Why eating less doesn't always work

Unfortunately, treatment is extremely complicated and long-lasting, and at first patients don't see any spectacular changes, which reduces their motivation and positive attitude. The problem here is not just overconsumption, but rather many factors that are imposing on each other. It's become a complex psychological activity, as well as an essential pleasure in life. Eating food helps regulate emotions, dealing with stress, sadness, anger, or regret as well. So many people find it so difficult to get rid of it, and they don 't know any other more difficult ways to adapt to the medications they're taking in their lives.
