Should we be afraid of food at all?

But is it really right and should be feared? There is a belief that they pose a danger to health and even life. Ingredients marked with the symbol E on the label are very often a concern for consumers.

Table of Contents

1. Which means the symbol E on the label

Food manufacturers focus primarily on improving organoleptic values. Another purpose of their use is to extend the shelf life of food. Additional substances are divided into 5 groups: dyes (E 100E 199), preservatives and acidity regulators (E 200E 299), antioxidants (E 300399), ?? stabilizers, emulsifiers, thickening agents, fillers (E 400E 499) other products (above E 500).

2. Most commonly used food additives

This also shows a high prevalence of these substances (K. Walkowiak-Tomczak 2016). Among the most commonly occurring dyes, it is added to jams, marinated fish, vegetable preservatives, marinate and olives (I. Wichrowska 2011). The first of these is added, among others, to baking, butter and oils. Their use is not only to give a specific flavor, but also to affect the pH of Rogozińska products, D. However, among the most frequently occurring colours is curcumin (E 100), which is a natural substance. Among other natural colours, you can find fish oil (E 101), barley (E 120) and caramel (E 150) (E 150). They are used to increase the intensity of the preservation of meat and beverages.

3. Should you be afraid of food?

Regulation (EC) No 133/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down rules for the application of additives to food in cases where an excessive intake of a fresh food additive is observed, the Agency shall notify the amount of ADI. For this purpose, an acceptable daily intake (Acceptable Daily Intake) is established at the national level. However, in practice, the majority of consumers do not calculate the consumption of the additive during the day. Consequently, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers that if too high a consumption of any additive in the diet is detected, the ADI shall be corrected by the Food Safety Agency (ECA). This includes, inter alia, that, taking into account a number of legal definitions for the consumer, that the use of ADIs should be considered to be entirely safe.

4. Are food additives harmful to children?

It has been observed that pigments such as E 102, E 104, E 110, E 122, E 124 and E 129 cause hyperactivity and impaired concentration in children. Additionally, one of the groups previously studied exhibited similar behaviour. McCann 2007). However, it should be noted that most products do not contain as much as E in their composition. Although children are a beverage-sensitive group, there is no need to worry about the additives, only to ensure proper nutrition. However, this will significantly reduce the risk of consuming large amounts of the additive. In addition, one half of the children may have consumed too much salt from selected sources.
