Sesame is a plant that you don't have to introduce to anyone. We all know what it looks like and how it tastes. Most of us associate sesame with crunchy sweet sesame seeds that you can buy in any kiosk. But the real sesame seed is more than just a sweet, light, fragile baton.

1. Sesame Species characteristics and curiosities

Indian sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is a perennial oilseed plant. The leaves are small, but their surface is covered with tiny glandular hairs. The flowers are about 3 cm long and come in a variety of colours. From the black-white to the red-colored to the dark-coloured, depending on the colour of the plant. It has been cultivated since the time of its introduction. It is known throughout the world for its unique flavor and aroma.

2. Sesame has a nutritional value

Seed oil is a vegetable oil used primarily in the production of edible sesame oil. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that it's an extremely high-energy raw material. Of course, 100 g of sesame seeds contain up to 647 kcal. Although they are mainly 59.9 g/100 g of fat, the seeds also contain a small amount of protein 23.2 g/100g. They are therefore a great alternative for vegetarian dieters. However, it should be noted that this is not a full-fledged protein.

3. Sezam for medicinal use

The seeds of sesame have been known for centuries as a plant with particular medicinal properties. The first documented mention of its active substances in sesame is from 1150 B.C.E. These records attribute sunlight energy to sesame seeds. To this day, it is not known what health properties the authors of the text were referring to. However, it can be said that the seeds were thought to have beneficial effects on the functioning of the human body.

4. Sesame for use in the kitchen

Sesame can be successfully used in many dishes, it is quite versatile and has a very pleasant and distinctive flavor. It is used to make many delicious desserts. The most famous is chalecha. Besides, sesame works great as an ingredient in nutritious Asian cuisine, a meat lady ingredient, and a sushi additive. Sesame is also made with tahini paste, which is an essential ingredient of homemade hummus.
