Poles have proven the effectiveness of HMB

The world can thank the Poles for the many inventions that have made our daily lives easier. Car wipes, cosmetics, car seats for children to their creation contributed the genius minds of people born on Polish soil. History is also full of the names of Polish scientists making breakthrough discoveries.

Table of Contents

1. What is HMB?

The abbreviation HMB is derived from the name hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate, which translates into Polish as 3-hydroxy-3-methylamic acid. It is a substance that is a metabolite of leucine branched-chain amino acid, which reacts with our muscle cells and initiates the activation of anabolic pathways. During metabolism, about 5% of leukine will be converted into HMB.

2. Methodology of the study

Participants were divided into two groups. Over the course of 12 weeks, one group received 3 capsules of Ca-HMB, a combination of calcium and HMB. One capsule contained 1000 mg HMB, resulting in at least 3 g of HMB per day. The second group was a placebo group. The big plus of this study was a 12-week follow-up in which the subjects were replaced.

3. The results

Following the supplementation period, the study group observed positive changes in body composition, the most important of which was an average loss of 0.9 kg of body fat. At the same time, the placebo group gained an average of 0.8 kg of fat. Both groups lost some muscle mass during this time, however, in the placebo team this decrease was 2.1 kg, whereas the HMB group had anti-catabolic effects, allowing only 1.0 kg of dry body weight to be lost.

4. The effectiveness of HMB

The results of the above study indicate that taking 3 g of HMB for 12 weeks helps to improve performance and body composition in endurance athletes. It remains only to answer the question of how HMB works and we owe its effects. Unfortunately, although there are many candidates to answer this question, it is difficult to say who is right and whether there is a clear answer at all. Starting in 1996, there has been a lot of research showing that HMB leads to beneficial changes in the composition of the body, which has been linked to the synthesis of anabolic markers or other proteins that can cause damage to body size, for example, from the optic nerve.
