For some time now, we've been hearing more and more recommendations for using coffee with functional mushroom additives. Mushroom coffee is attracting a lot of people's interest. This is because of the potential benefits that this combination brings. Who can reach for mushroom coffee and what are the benefits of mixing coffee with mushrooms?

1. What is mushroom coffee?

Mushroom coffee is nothing more than a well-thought-out blend of an appropriate type of coffee with functional mushrooms. Producers of this type can use standardized mushroom extracts or powder. In many cases, mushroom coffee also contains other valuable additives, such as plant adaptogens, vitamins or mineral ingredients.

2. Which makes up mushroom coffee

It is not surprising that mushroom coffee is a source of caffeine. In the vast majority of cases, manufacturers of coffee mushrooms use a variety of Coffea Arabica L. However, it is worth noting that the caffeine content in these coffees is not as high as in the traditional beverage This is due to the presence of a number of other additional ingredients. Additives can of course not be lacking in fungi.

Mushrooms in mushroom coffee blends are characterized by the presence of different active ingredients, thus each species has different properties, which in turn allows them to be used in other cases.

Reishi mushrooms are a rich source of various polysaccharides from a group of glucans, alkaloids and steroid compounds such as ganoderic acid. A scientific review of 26 clinical trials in people with various ailments (e.g. coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, advanced cancer stages, hypertension) observed varying effects.

One of the most popular additives in mushroom coffee is Hericium erinaceus, i.e. jelly bean. Lions Mane, or yamabushitake, is a mushroom native to Asia that is also grown commercially in the U.S. It is a source of many bioactive components Among phenols, terpenoids, alkaloids, and organic compounds, there are also polysaccharides and glycoproteins. Particular attention should be paid to the extracts of lion's mane that are standardized for the presence of beta-glucans (polisaccharids), which are components of the walls of plant cells, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant compounds.

Trametes versicolor is a fungus that is particularly valued in oncology. It is thought to contain polysaccharides, chrysine and polysaccharide peptide (PCP) that are exceptionally helpful in the treatment of certain cancers, e.g. colon, stomach and breast (C. Hobbs 2004; C. J. Torkelson et al. 2012; K. Pilkington et al., 2022).

Cordyceps sinensis and cordyceps militaris mushrooms are a source of amino acids (ergotionein, GABA gamma-aminobutyric acid, 5-HTP 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan), phenolic acids, and numerous nucleoside compounds. In addition, the fruits of these fungi contain valuable vitamins: A, B2, B3, C, and E, as well as biofuels such as magnesium, potassium selenium, and sulphur. Results of in vivo and in vitro studies presented in one of the scientific reviews indicate that the biological activity of mactroduced fructose extracts may also decrease with a few spherical strains, immunoglobulins, anti-inflammatory drugs, and hypoglycemic effects.

8. Effects of incorporating functional fungi into the diet

Caffeine in coffee and active ingredients derived from mushrooms is a compound that is particularly recommended in states of increased psychophysical activity. Excessive fatigue is usually accompanied by low energy levels, poor stamina, sleep problems, irritability, low mood.

9. Mushroom coffee indications

A mixture of coffee and standardised mushroom extracts supplemented with e.g. vitamins, minerals and amino acids is mainly recommended for people who are at high risk of fatigue. On the one hand, it can serve as a stimulating beverage during work that requires a lot of concentration, such as at the desk. Often these types of duties are accompanied by high stress, which can lead to sleep quality. Mushroom coffee can therefore be used by office workers, IT departments, managers, students, scientists. Good concentration is also important for drivers, especially professionals and long-distance drivers.
