Lactose-free products everything you need to know about them

Lactose intolerance is a complex disease that has multiple causes and can cause different symptoms. Almost every store can now find foods with the label "lactose-free", and until a few years ago the only such food item was cow's milk. Who should use them?

1. Is that what lactose is and what it does?

Lactose is not only present in milk It is also found in baked goods and meat products. It is very often found in medicinal products and dietary supplements, such as protein supplements. Lactase, also known as milk sugar, is a glucose and galactose-containing double sugar found in the milk of all mammals. Due to its content, products have a better taste, smell and consistency.

Reduced activity or total absence of this enzyme adversely affects the digestion of lactose, as it is not digested as an ideal food for the gut bacteria present in the food chain. Gases are produced: hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and short-chain organic acids (milk, vinegar, propionate, butter). These include diarrhoea, bloating, stomach pain, the feeling of swelling. 3. What's the difference between lactose intolerance and cow's milk protein allergy?

One of the most common allergies is an allergy to cow's milk protein. Under normal conditions, the body should ignore the allergen. The most common include various skin symptoms, digestive symptoms (lung, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, reflux, nausea, swelling and stomach) and those involving the respiratory system (asthma, sleep apnea, throat inflammation, nosebleeds). The main cause is abnormal lactic acid activity.

4. What is a lactose-free diet, and what are its dangers?

The level of restriction depends on the individual lactose tolerance of dairy products, so it is essential to determine the appropriate dose for the individual when using lactose-free products. If we decide on this type of diet for health reasons, we should make sure that we have the right choice of alternative products that will have a similar nutritional and energy value. In some cases, it is necessary to completely eliminate all milk products from the diet, and therefore it is important to monitor your body and to consult a healthcare professional to know the reasons for this.

5. A range of lactose-free products

Some people may be sensitive to very small amounts of lactose, while others will need a higher dose to notice symptoms. If you are intolerant, you should combine your diet so that it contains non-lactose products, but also calcium-rich plant-based products. However, if you are uncomfortable even after these products, you need to consult a good doctor or dietitian and determine the exact cause of the problem. You should then learn the rules of the plant diet to avoid deficiencies in ingredients such as protein, calcium, iron, and vitamin B12.

6. Are lactose-free products a new dietary trend or a real need?

Many studies indicate that most people affected by lactose intolerance are of working age, i.e. between 18 and 65 years of age (M. Pogorzelska, 2010). Manufacturers should pay attention not only to advertising campaigns but also to public education. Manufacturers of dairy products are following new trends and adapting their offerings to the changing needs of consumers. In order to be considered to be healthy, in some cases, the production of milk may not increase or decrease to 0.1% due to a lack of knowledge of the nutritional requirements of the consumer.
