Is it worth using a sugar detox?

For the purposes of this article, the word sugar will refer to the so-called added sugars, i.e. monosaccharides and disaccharids added by food manufacturers to products and foods, as well as sugars naturally found in honey, syrups, juices and fruit concentrates.

1. Sugar is not as harmful as thought

According to Khan T. A. and Sievenpiper J. L. in their 2016 publication, "If sugar-sweetened sugars were to be considered as one of the main causes of obesity in the 1970s, but if they were to replace sugar in their diet", according to a study by the Keys's A. In the 1970's, however, a number of studies have found that the main cause of metabolic diseases and cardiovascular disease was saturated fat intake. However, after a decade of research, the Royal Canadian Heart Association (RCA) has suggested that the effects of sugar intake on body fat consumption and blood sugar consumption have been shown to decrease.

2. Compulsion to eat sugar

In recent years, there has also been much talk about sugar addiction, which can be misleading. So far, it has not been shown that sugar or any other food products cause addiction symptoms and show a similar mechanism to drug use. Westwater M.L., Fletcher P.C., Ziauddeen H. In their review work, they claim that studies indicate that animals have addiction-like behaviours when they have limited access to food.

3. Sugar detox and taste

The participants in the Bartolotto C study eliminated added sugar and artificial sweeteners for two weeks. Most of the subjects, as much as 95%, after that time considered the taste of sweet beverages to be significantly sweeter than before the detox, but 75% of people confirmed that the flavor of other products was also felt to be more intense (e.g. sugar cane, carrots). 86% of subjects stopped being tempted to eat sugar on the sixth day of their diet. Not only did they stop eating sugar, but they also stopped eating sugar because they were no longer needed to eat it. So, in order to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet, the WHO suggests that they should be consumed in a way that would reduce their intake of sugar by a maximum of 10%. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to limit the quantity of sugar consumed and, in general, to reduce their dietary intake.

4. Sugar detoxification or rationing of the diet

The most sensible solution is to improve the quality of the diet. However, this does not mean that there is a need to eliminate them. If the most important rational nutritional principles are to be followed, it is best to consume them rarely but also less frequently thanks to the need to eat sweetened vegetables, fruit, fiber, and protein. If added sugar and sugar should not be a regular part of the menu, because in most cases they do not have any nutrient value (other than calorific value). However, it does not necessarily mean that they need to be eliminated. If we try to eat sugar twice a week (either in moderate diets or in a balanced diet or in the absence of energy bills), then we should be able to determine the consequences for ourselves.
