Kalarepa is known mainly in two varieties green and red-purple. It is characterized by a sweet and slightly sharp taste. It's associated with spring and is one of the most popular novelty in Poland.

Table of Contents

1. Health properties

Kalarepa is a low-calorie product consisting of almost 90% water. Due to the presence of fat-soluble vitamins (A, E) in 100 g, it is recommended for people on a reduction diet. It is a good source of potassium, calcium, iron and magnesium. In smaller quantities it also contains manganese and zinc. It contains B vitamins and vitamin C. Because of its fat soluble vitamin A, E, it's recommended to consume it with a fat additive, e.g. oils or oils.

2. Anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties

A study published in 2014 found that the phenols present in kalarepa have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects and may help reduce the risk of diabetes.

3. Protecting against Cancers

Kalarepa is an excellent source of glucosinolanes (4052 mg/100 g of product) which have anti-cancer properties (can protect against breast, lung, prostate, or stomach cancers). It is a valuable source of fiber, which further reduces the time it takes to bind to food.

4. Kalarepa is a slimming agent and a strong muscle

Kalarepa contains high levels of leucine and isoleucine, which have an effect on the regeneration of muscle fibers through training, and protects against muscle breakdown. A study published in Nutrients in May 2015 shows that leukine accelerates fat burning and reduces hunger attacks by affecting the release of glucose in the blood.

5. Attention to newsletters

Kalarepa starts appearing on store shelves at the turn of spring and summer, but we should be moderate in its consumption. It should be remembered that the novelties contain harmful nitrates and plant protection products that in large quantities can adversely affect the human body. A 2016 study by C. Robba et al. showed that kalarepa is a high battery of heavy metals.

6. Applications

Kalarepa is most commonly consumed raw as a snack or as an ingredient in salads. Baking can also be an excellent addition to main dishes. 1 average size of kalarepa (165 g) = 48 calories.
