How many calories do chips have?

Chips are one of the most popular snacks, and there are more and more of them in stores.

1. Highly processed food

Chips are made using potatoes, vegetable oil and salt. In stores, you can find many flavored chips. These products usually have an extensive list of ingredients. The flavor chips contain in their composition, among others: sugar, fructose, butter powder, vegetables in powder, the aroma of smoked tobacco, yeast extract, citric acid, whey powder, flavor enhancers, etc.

2. That's a lot of energy

For comparison the standard pack of chips is exactly 100 g. A handful of chips weighs about 15 g, and the nutritional value of this portion is as follows: energy value: 85.8 kcal, protein: 0.8 g; fat: 6.1 g, including saturated fatty acids: 1.6 g; monounsaturated fatty acid: 3.1 g; omega-6 polyunsaturate: 1.3 g; overall carbon monoxide: 7.5 g; dietary fiber: 1.2 g.

3. A missing source of vitamins and minerals

Because of their low nutritional value, chips are not a source of any vitamins or minerals. Only 0.3 mg of vitamin B3, 0.1 mg of Vitamin B6, 3.3 μg of folic acid, 2.5 mg of vitamins C, 1.2 mg of vitamina E, 0.1mg of zinc, 0.3mg of iron, 2.7 mg of calcium, 120.2 mg of potassium, 13.4 mg of phosphorus, 103.5 mg of sodium are present in this product portion (15 g).

4. The source of the salt

100 g of the product contains an average of 1.5 g of salt, while the maximum recommended daily intake of this compound is 5 g (a spoonful of salt) and applies to both salt added to food and in food products. Regularly reaching for salt snacks such as chips can contribute to excessive salt intake.

5. The source of acrylamide

Acrylamide is a compound produced during the heat treatment of high-carbohydrate foodstuffs (frying, baking). It is an industrial substance used for water purification and as an ingredient in cement, wallpaper, dyes, adhesives or sealants. In the food industry, it is the chips that contain the most from 50 to up to 3500 μg/kg. This substance exhibits potential carcinogenic properties. It is also mutagenic and toxic to the human nervous system.
