Homocysteine is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease

Commonly known risk factors for these diseases include obesity, high blood pressure, smoking. What is it? How to reduce its levels in the blood? According to GUS data, they are the most common cause of death for both men and women in Poland. Increasing interest is also being generated in homocysteine, which has been recognized as an independent factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases.

1. The source of homocysteine

Homocysteine is not found in food, and its primary by-product is methionine, which is mainly found in animal products.

3. Hyperhomocysteinemia? What is it?

A blood homocysteine test is not routinely performed. People who are active in the blood of people with cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking of tobacco, metabolic syndrome, increased family burden of cardiovasculare diseases, gastrointestinal disease with hyperlipidemia); people who are actively involved in blood-circulatory disease (coronary heart disease, coronary artery disease, changes in blood glucose levels of the arteries, heart attack, stroke, heart disease and platelet counts), are also observed in men under the age of 15 μm, in women under age 12 years, in adults under age of 10 years, and in adults over age 15 years (including those with high blood sugar, B/ B, B, and B, respectively).

4. Hyperhomocysteinemia is the cause

One of these is the innate polymorphism of the genes that code for the reduction of methylene tetrahydrofolium MTHFR. Hyperhomocysteineemia can also be caused by an improper lifestyle, including: poor diet, particularly high in folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12, smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, ?? drinking excess coffee, being low in physical activity, taking certain medications. It can be the result of genetic polymors of enzymes that are associated with the transformation of homocysteines. Consequently, the efficiency of producing the active form of folic acetate methylocysteene, which is essential for the remotely homogeneous environment, can decrease.

Hyperhomocysteinemia affects the impairment of nitric oxide (NO), which enlarges the diameters of blood vessels. Cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and congestive heart failure, are the leading causes of death worldwide. Consequently, it disrupts blood flow through the vessels and leads to the development of both arteries and veins.

6. Hyperhomocysteinemia is the treatment

The recommended doses are 500 μg folic acid, 100600 μg vitamin B12 and 625 mg vitamin B6 (D. Korzeniowska, A. Adequate creatinine levels, whose deficiencies increase homocysteine synthesis, are also very important (J. Lukasiak 2005).

7. Is it even something to eat to lower your homocysteine levels?

It is better to prevent than to treat. Vitamins from natural sources are better digestible than their synthetic forms, and food also contains a number of other beneficial substances, including antioxidants, which have a positive effect on the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

In the body, folic acid is converted into the active metabolite 5-methylotetrahydrofolian in selected dairy products, which is involved in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Consequently, it prevents or slows the development of cardiovascular disease (A.E. Kenney 2017). It occurs in both animal and vegetable products. It is also an important coenzyme for enzymes involved in the conversion of homocysteine to cysteine.
