Every year the magazine U.. S. News publishes a ranking of the diets available in the market. For years the Mediterranean, DASH and Flexi Diet have been considered the best. Their effectiveness has been confirmed by numerous studies, and the number of supporters continues to grow. Nevertheless, there could be no shortage of diets on the list that are definitely less beneficial to health, but are applied due to the promises of the creators about fast results. One of the last positions in the ranking (21.. out of 24) occupies the Optavia diet, which is not popular in Poland, but in the United States.

Table of Contents

1. What is the Optavia diet?

The Optvia Diet is a program developed in 2017 by Medifast Inc. According to its creators, its goal is to develop healthy habits and implement them into everyday life. The program is described as a comprehensive approach consisting of 4 elements. The most emphasized by the authors is the point that they think distinguishes Optovia from other diets, is the constant help of a private person and what is meant to accompany the process of change and support when needed. It is worth mentioning that it is usually people who have no dietary training and have simply completed the program. The creators of the single source diet also claim that they are willing to contribute to the society by creating a method that supports their own diet.

2. What's it look like in practice?

In practice, there are two stages of the process: weight loss and maintenance of the effect. In the first stage, it is recommended to consume 8001000 kcal for approximately 12 weeks. The standard model should consume 5 meals purchased from the manufacturer every approximately 23 hours, as well as the inclusion of one home-cooked meal. A self-made meal should consist of 140200 g of lean meat or fish. In case of severe hunger, you can also consume half a glass of jelly, 3 loads of celery and nuts. The carbohydrate content should not exceed 100 g per day.

3. Is there any cost to the optavia diet?

On the Optavia diet website you can directly buy products created by Medifast Inc. For a recommended 5 & 1 diet plan, the cost of a set that is enough for just over 3 weeks and consists of 119 meals is $395.25 which gives about PLN 1,660. Of course, this should include the cost for self-cooked meals. You can also choose to create an individual set, but then it is much higher. However, to achieve the expected results, you need to spend an additional $199 (about PLN 835) because the package gives access to the food plan, online platforms, the Optovia community and the ability to collaborate with a coach.

4. Strengths of the Optavia programme

Supporters of Optavia point to a number of benefits. The most obvious benefit is its ease of use. It requires you to prepare only one meal a day on your own, the rest are foods that can be eaten immediately or possibly watered.

5. Is there any risk involved in implementing the programme?

Although the dietary authors are talking about slow changes, their plan is to simplify the diet by an average of 1 kcal per kilo of salt per hour. For a woman weighing 50 kg per day, this would certainly lead to very rapid weight loss, but unfortunately it can also be associated with a very fast jo-jo effect. Basic dietary change (PPM), which is the amount of energy that the body needs to maintain basic life functions, in a simplified diet, is about 1 kg/kg/hour. If a woman who weighs 50 kg/hours of salt consumes this diet, it would certainly cause a very rapid reduction in body weight.

6. Summary

The Optavia diet is a diet that undoubtedly attracts with its promises of quick effects and weight loss. Indeed, at first glance, the whole program seems carefully thought out and professionally prepared. In these times of stress and haste, ready-made solutions involving water powder are certainly easy to find supporters. Unfortunately, these types of dietary models have many negative consequences and, equally importantly, they do not bring long-term effects.
