1. What is chitosan and how does it work?
Chitosan is produced from chitosan, which is a structural component of the shells of crustaceans such as crabs, shrimp, and lobsters. It is currently produced and sold as a supplement, although it is not a completely new and revolutionary product it was on the market more than a dozen years ago. Chitosane can be consumed with fats, so its absorption in the small intestine is limited. It acts as a fat blocker, literally blocking it before absorption, thereby limiting the number of calories that can be used for the process of lipogenesis, which translates into fat loss.2. Effectiveness in weight loss
Although we do have a good mechanistic explanation for the effects of chitosin, unfortunately, studies on its use are limited. Most experiments tested its effectiveness in people who were overweight or obese, and they looked almost exclusively at chitosan's ability to accelerate weight loss relative to placebo groups. The good news is that most of them showed improvements in muscle composition, such as body weight and body fat percentage. However, a study published in 2006 by G. R. Kaats and colleagues showed the effects on taking 3 grams of chitoin daily in people with a truly overweight body weight.3. Dosage and side effects
Chitosan is mainly taken in doses of 1500 to 3000 milligrams per day, so it is best to divide this dose into two equal portions, e.g. after 1500 mg taken before the two biggest meals of the day, preferably those with a lot of fat. Sometimes it is also suggested to divide the daily dose into 3 equal servings taken before meals. There is much controversy surrounding chitosan and its mechanism of action.
