Calorie content of the diet below PPM why it is not checked

Every day, the body needs energy to function properly -- too drastically limiting calorie intake not only fails to promote daily activity, but also doesn't seem to be an effective way to fight overweight.

Table of Contents

1. What is PPM

Primary metabolism (PPM) is the amount of energy required to maintain basic life functions such as breathing, system functioning, maintaining a constant body temperature, regeneration processes. PPM is the largest part of a person's daily energy needs. Its value depends on gender, age, body weight, muscle mass. The greater the body mass, the higher the PPM value.

2. How to calculate the PPM value

The PPM value can be calculated using patterns, most commonly the Harris-Benedict and Mifflin-St. Jeor patterns. In a study of Miller S., Milliron B. J., Woolf K. In 38 women, PPM values were measured using indirect calorimetry.

3. It's for women who don't do a lot of sports

PPM = 795 + 7, 18 × body weight [kg].

4. It's for women in sports

PPM = 50, 4 + 21, 1 × body mass [kg] Weijs P. J. and ten Haaf T. They conducted a similar analysis involving amateur athletes. The study found that the Cunningham pattern of fat-free body weight (FFM) was best for intensive sports participants. PPM is 95, 272 × FFM [kg) + 2026, 161 Recreational exercise participants who want to reduce their body fat can use the Harris-Benedict, Mifflin-Stor Jeora pattern.

5. How to calculate the CPM

CPM is the number of kilocalories spent each day, taking into account in addition to PPM also the energy used in daily activity. The recommendations presented in the Nutrition Standards for the population of Poland are still current. The level of physical activity (PAL) should be estimated taking into consideration 3 levels.

6. Consequences of a calorie diet lower than PPM

PPM is essential for the proper functioning of calories. If daily functioning and physical activity require additional energy, this is about 10% of the CPM. However, if the goal is to reduce body weight, we should also consider the calorific effect of food, i.e. the periodic increase in the rate of metabolism associated with digestion, absorption and metabolism of nutrients. For this reason, if we take calorie intake with food, we must consider that the calories intake of the diet should be reduced by about 10% per day. For each group of participants in this study, the weight gain of the body weight loss diet will be increased by more than 200 calories per week.
