Berry juice Application and rules

In Poland the period of glory of this product passed more than 100 years ago, but it seems that birch juice is becoming popular again today.

1. Characteristics of birch juice

Birch juice, known for a long time, was used to quench thirst and was also used as a medicine. Already in 921, an Arab traveler Ahmad ibn Fadletlan observed that birch water tastes similar to water, although it is slightly sweeter. The sugar content (mainly glucose and fructose) reaches a maximum of about 3%. It was attributed to its medicinal properties and was given to patients on wet days, kidney stones, anemia, arthritis.

2. Nutritional value of birch juice

Berry juice is a low-calorie drink. Depending on the species, the content of the nutrients and minerals may vary. In addition to this, the region where the berry grows is important. In the second place potassium is placed about 170 mg per 100 ml. The values given refer to the popular Polish varieties B. pendula and B. pubescens.

3. The medicinal properties of birch juice

It is also used as a diuretic, a remedy for scurvy and external wounds. In Russia, a syrup was prepared, which was applied to injured areas of the skin. The juice was mixed in a specific proportion with ethyl alcohol and cooked on a flame to obtain an appropriate consistency.

4. Use of birch juice

Although birch juice is gaining popularity in Poland, it is still a high-priced beverage. We will pay about 11 PLN per liter. There are no scientific recommendations for the use of birch Juice for medical purposes. You can drink it for pleasure. There is no information about its proper dosage and possible side effects. It is also risky to combine it with medicines, especially diuretics such as chlorothiazide, furosemide, hydrochlorothiaze.

5. What kind of birch juice is best?

In Central Europe, birch juice can be extracted on its own. The easiest way to extract the juice is to cut the juice in the bush to a depth of 0.5 cm using a knife. The season starts in late March or early April. The juice is then pressed from the roots to the top of the bush. In order to get birch water, you should choose a tree located in a clear area, preferably away from roads and pollution.

6. The recipe is birch lemonade

Birch juice 300 ml, 1 lemon juice, ∙ a handful of strawberries, ̇ a spoonful of honey, ̨ a piece of ginger, ‬ a few cubes of ice.

7. It's a way of preparing

I put ice in a tall glass.. pour a little bit of birch juice.. add lemon juice, ginger, honey.. mix it all up.. and then put it in half-cut strawberries.
